Fountain/Ballpoint Pen recommendation
I'm looking to buy a nice pen (not toooo nice lol) for someone as a Xmas present. I would like to spend $100-150 or so on one. I looked at Mont Blanc but every single pen they make is at least 2x that range. Any recommendation is appreciated! Thank you!

Fountain or ball point. If the person doesn't currently use fountains I wouldn't purchase him one. But if they do, than for that price range I'd go for the Pilot w/ the retractable nib. F point because japanese fine nibs are illllll.

I've had good experience with Waterman fountain pens but the reality is, compared to a nice rollerball they are pointless and a pain in a lote situations. If all they use handwriting for is personal notes like invitations and thank you notes, a fountain pen can be nice to use and ink color selection is very expansive. However, if you're looking to buy them a nice day to day pen, that they will take out to sign things, take quick notes from phone calls, or things like this, I'd recommend a nice ballpoint or rollerball
THB, I used to be big into different types of pens and have a decent collection, but the vast majority of the time (and I'm talking except for maybe a couple times a year) I write with blue Pilot G-2s |

Not trying to single you out, but this kind of mentality has always annoyed me. If you find that you are the type of person that doesn't have the sense of presence to keep track of your belongings, then that's fine... buy cheap stuff. But, for the love of God don't question the choices of others because you fall into the category of "people who can't find they're keys in the morning." |

I am absolutely the "where the fuck are my keys where the fuck is my wallet" type of person but, for me, spending a little coin on a nice "accessory" has been very beneficial. I have about 5 pairs of nice sunglasses and can locate all of them. Same with pens, headphones, whatever. I'm more apt to not caring or losing cheap shit than I am stuff of nicer quality |

Don't worry, I don't feel singled out -- your description of my mentality is inaccurate; I'm the antithesis of what you described and I don't usually critique others/question others' choices based on my own shortfalls or flaws. Although being scatter-brained and unorganized can lead to misplaced items, I believe that small and expensive items are easily stolen and easily misplaced by even the most organized of people. I still don't believe a $300 pen is a good investment (though I can certainly understand why someone wants one). |

Not for you no. But look at it this way - just because something won't appreciate in value does not make it a poor purchase. It's a simple CBA. If a pen costs $300, and the owner values ownership of it at or above $300, it's a good purchase and they will buy it. If they don't - they simply won't buy it. While arbitrary at best - people do this all the time - place a monetary value on how they expect they will perceive ownership of an item. That can explain why you may see people driving S600s wearing jeans from Costco (usually older people) - they get enough value from S600 ownership to justify the cost of one, but place value on their clothes much lower, to the point where spending >$100 on a pair of nice/decent jeans is ludicrous to them.

So I found this pen that is out of my price range but still manageable. It looks quite nice too. Any comment on it? Again I would like a Mont Blanc but it's at least another $100 for a decent one.

Okay I think these aren't bad. Thoughts?
All of these are sold on Amazon. The middle on is a fountain pen. Per the comment above, I'm not sure if he's ever had a fountain pen before so I'm not really keen on getting one as a gift. Perhaps ballpoints are the better route?
