BMW M5 Doing 200mph on American Roads! I Dont Support This...
So I found this video on the internet of a BMW M5 doing 200 mph on ocean blvd on long island NY. I was really not too happy to see this but I must say that the car is impressive. Hopefully the driver in this car realizes that he easily could have killed himself and other doing this. This is 10 times more risky than doing 130-140mph. The roads in the US arent made for that type of driving. Anyway, here is the video...

Not going to condone anything like that on public roads, but having been on that same road hundreds of times if you are going to do 200mph on a public road that's the one to do it on!
Been on Ocean "Parkway" many times, and it's empty when it's not beach season. Very few entrance/exit points and early morning run it would be completely empty. Not saying everyone should go out there and do this, but it seems like no one got hurt or killed so no need in making a huge fuss about it. I've seen videos of a Ford GTTT doing well over 200 and in a much quicker time on that same stretch of hwy. Whatever. Us talking or arguing how stupid it is on here isn't going to stop people from ever doing it. |

Navigator is good to have in high speed runs. Even if you know the roads he will keep you advised of what's coming. I have navigated in the Silver State Classic and things come up so fast at speed it is very difficult to keep up.

Seeing how the road was deserted, I don't see the fuss over this. Was it idiotic? Yes. But seeing the conditions, he wasn't putting anyone at risk besides themselves. This isn't that idiotic kid that did a stunt in his M5 in a neighborhood up in Canada. |

At those speeds they covered a solid 7-8 miles in that video alone, not including the run up and slow down. A lot can happen in that distance at that speed, road problems, some idiot wandering out in front of you etc.
That being said, that road did look pretty 'safe' for those shenanigans, and I have done my fair share of putting myself in harms way so I'm not gonna judge these guys. I do know that I would be damn sure my car and especially my tires were in top condition before doing something like this. They are pushing the tires pretty hard. |

Is it unsafe because of the roads in U.S. or other American drivers? There is nothing special here in Germany about the roads and people make high speed runs all the time and it's legal on most parts of the autobahn. Im just curious.

NY hwys are littered with cops. I am suprised he was able to pull this off w/o being cuffed & stuffed.. I must say that M5 was very stable at such a speed. 85 mph in my modded Lexus is a near death experience

Whyd you post this in two spots?
Actually there are only two cops on Ocean Parkway at a time. The whole 25 miles of it. They are usually both chilling in a beach parking lot talking to each other too. That stretch of road has been used since the sixties as a street race/top end run drag. And its almost deserted in the off season with no entrances and exits, except for the beaches. Fairly smooth and almost perfectly straight. |

Agreed. I live in Freeport ~ 10 minutes away from that road. My GF lives in Deer Park so its the easiest and nicest way there. ive been blown by in the night by everything from a Mustang II to an Enzo.

Ocean Parkway doesnt have any potholes. There is one bumpy section for about a 1/2 mile because the beach has settled underneath it. But its just wavy and you can still take it about 120 fairly safely.

As much as I want to tag this guy as a moron, I can't say I haven't done runs just as stupid.
I hit 140mph in my RS coming out of the Irvine Center Drive on ramp for the 405, which isn't exactly an empty highway by any means.

I lived in Germany (near Idar-Oberstein) for 5 years, not a subject matter expert like you but I will say... Most of the highways in America are inferior compared to those in Germany. The material they are made of, the way they are engineered... Much safer to go "fast" on the Autobahn in the no restricted area than here in the states. Now if you are talking about the drivers...lol As you know, in Germany the right lane is for driving, the left lane is for passing. If you are in the left lane, people will move out of your way, almost every time. In the states, there is no such courtesy. People drive in whatever lane they want, at whatever speed they want (50mph in a 70mph in the left lane), because they believe they are entitled to. Morons.
