trading up or down when going to the new 1m from 335i????
just wondering how many people will be trading their 335i to get the 1m, and if its a trade up or down? since every thread comparing the m3 vs 335i/335is allways everyone favors the mighty m3(including myself) because an m car is an m car. however i dont see the same when it comes down to the new 1m.
what says e90post?????? |

I would say it is a trade down even though it is an M car. But I think I'm just saying that cause I don't like the styling of the car (it's too small, too many curves and not straight impacting lines) and think the 1 series are kinda more for the female crowd :P haha

Also, the 1M is fugly IMO and i'd rather have a new 335 for the money.

335's though... :P I don't see any girls down here with one. Only the 320/325 convertibles (which I also think are girly or old man's car)

In my town, it seems like the 3 is driven by 70% late 40's women, with the remainder split between 30-ish men and late 50's men.
I'd consier the 1M an upgrade, but not by much. A little better handling, a bit better power/weight. Worse practicality. |

would have to say trade up....
the look and size have nothing to do with it, those are tastes. And really one could point out that the 3 series has gotten way to big to be considered a traditional sporty BMW. Whereas the 1 series has shed some of that flab. (i would have bought a 3 if i were willing to spend the cash mind you. 4 doors make child's seats so much easier to deal with) It is mostly an upgrade because, while it is the same engine, it does have very considerable improvements to the suspension and design over the 335i and 135i. Seeing as chassis wise the 335 and 135 are basically the same except for 1 being slightly heavier and the other being slightly more sports oriented. So an improvement over one is really an improvement over both. If you can deal with the size difference. Honestly once you get used to the smaller car you kind of enjoy not hauling so much metal around with you. Except when it comes to the child seat of course

I would say up in performance. M is M. But, again, it's a 1. I did not like either of the loaners I was given, so I would not want a M1. M3? Sure. M5? Maybe. M6? Maybe. X6M? Sure. X5M? Maybe.

If you can avoid your inclination to think of it as an "up" or "down" sort of thing, you'll be better off.
You got the vehicle you want. The sole comparative you should consider is "I wanted this one" vs. "I didn't want the other one."

I'd say it's more of a lateral move than an up or down.

I love the M series and its performance, but living in NY makes it a requirement for me to have AWD for winter since I don't have a winter beater.
And if climate wasn't an issue I'd still go with an M3 over the 1M just cuz of the size. I'm a pretty big guy and look funny in such a small car.

interesting to see that even when made an M car, the 1 series is still highly disliked. i personally like the 135 and the 1M just not for me as my car, maybe if i had the cash as a toy to play around and mod it and stuff. |

given that this is the e9x forum, you're getting predictable answers. ask the same question in the 1addicts forum and they'll tell you 1M. Personally, I'm a single guy with no kids, and nowhere near rich enough to buy an m3 YET, so I would go for the 1M once my lease is up. I don't care that people think it's a girls car, etc. since those opinions are subjective and personally inclined. The performance is stellar, and the price a bargain. Not to mention its tasty wide-body and aggressive aerodynamics ;]

I hope all your kids are female. Perhaps that way at least you won't teach your myopic, outdated sexist morays to them.
