Yeah we had some really bad weather (snow/ice) here last night and this morning. I happened to see this live on TV this morning about 7:30. All they could say was that he had been spinning his wheels and couldn't get up a hill; then he backed into the gas station and the car burned up. I don't see a connection between spinning tires in snow and catching fire. But what do I know . . .

You guys act as if you have never seen this before. Happens all the time--get stuck in the snow spin the tires--engine catches on fire. This is bizzare, I am guessing there was some prior damage and the guy revving the engine and getting it hot was the final straw.

High engine speeds + no air flow = fail.
I say if we were to take out the ice on the road and put the thing on a dyno with no fans infront of it and just let the idiot "go" 50mph you'd see the same result.

happens pretty often in the snow. ppl get stuck and rev the crap out of their engine and its working just as hard but its not getting the passing air to cool it and the radiator. in this case what it looked it, spinning the tires for too long and the friction and the heat can cause your tire to pop or other mechanical failure causing ignition and combustion. sucks.
happened to a guy stuck outside my friends house. got it all on home surveillance cameras. |

Doing that creates a serious amount of heat,he must of been spinning for a long time which people do when stuck like other poster stated "lots of heat with no air flow"

How does it generate a lot of heat?
If there is no traction, then the engine cannot be working hard spinning the wheels. You may as well be revving it in neutral. Likewise, the tyres can't get hot. If they were to get hot, that means there is a reasonable amount of friction. If there is friction, then you have traction and you will be moving not spinning your wheels. |

That's all it takes. Run you vehicle up to redline in neutral for 5 minutes and your car will catch fire as well. The exhaust manifolds get red hot w/no air flow.

Who knows for how long he had been spinning his tires.
Even so, it seems strange the lit up, the friction certainly isn't the same hence engine load wouldn't be either. Although the guy seemed to be reving it like mad and as stated this might not be the best way to get out of somwhere when you're stuck. A little bit of rough sand under the tires works best, if you´re stuck like he seemed to be. For sure my cars haven't caught fire when spinning on ice, all the nannies are off if no kids are riding along. |

And of course there is friction at the tires. You see them spinning right? Are they not contacting the ground? Are they floating? No. Friction doesn't always mean traction. What do you think happens when you rub your hand together? Friction. Heat. If you were to get "traction" your hands would not rub against each other and get stuck. No heat. But there is still friction as you cannot move your hands....more like resistance but it's still a form of friction. Fail.... I bet the driver didn't have snows on....
