BMW 335i Fuel Pump and Turbo Questions

Hey everyone,

I'm in the market for a used 335i coupe either 2007 or 2008 but I have a few questions regarding them.

1. The one I'm looking at has already had a fuel pump replaced. How much does this cost to replace again?

2. How frequently does the fuel pump/turbo failure occur per replacement?

3. Is it possible to purchase an extended warranty from BMW that will cover the fuel pump, turbo failures? If so what are the costs and terms?

Thanks for your help

2. Some people have experienced N54 HPFP failures in a few hundred to a few thousand miles. Some get lucky and go 10-30K miles. There is no way to know how long a N54/N55 HPFP will last or when it will fail as BMW doesn't seem to fully understand the root cause of the failures. Some owners have had 5-7 HPFPs replaced.

3. The HPFP (only) currently has a 10 yr./120,000 mile extended warranty in the U.S. This may or may not apply to a modded vehicle? You would need to contact your BMW dealer to get specific prices on an extended warranty that "may" cover the turbos, fuel injectors, ignition coils, etc. Read the fine print carefully to be sure what is and what is not covered as warranties can vary considerably.
Hey Trackrat,

Thanks for your reply. Does the HPFP warranty apply for BMW's in Canada as well?

It doesn't matter if the fuel pump has been replaced, because if it was replaced pre-December 2010, then it's still faulty. Thankfully for you, the recall takes care of it

Just so you know, everything trackrat said about the warranty is incorrect since the hpfp recall takes care of all fuel pumps regardless of milage or year

Have a 08 335i with 49.2K miles on the clock. Love the car, btw.,

Lost a turbo at 20K miles. I asked how much it would have cost to replace without the warranty. Was told not to ask. Asked again, was told around $4k. Makes the fuel pump look like chump change! Just bought the extended warranty because I plan on keeping the car a few more years. If I change my mind, it should make the car easier to sell to a private party. I paid 3K for the warranty. Will make money if the transmission or another turbo goes...

HPFP failure doesn't leave you stranded. The engine still runs on significantly reduced power, but it doesn't leave you stranded on the side of the road.

At this time there is no worldwide N54/N55 HPFP recall for all x35i models. Hopefully BMW will eventually determine the root cause(s) for the chronic N54/N55 HPFP failures on the x35i models and properly repair all x35i models sold worldwide, as the safety issues can't be ignored.

Thanks for the accurate info Track rat. Anyway to check my VIN # to see if it qualifies for the extended warranty?
