will the e90 OEM roof rack collapse with 4 snowboards?

hey.. Does anyone have a problem with carrying 4 snowboards w/binding?..the manual says the max. weight is 70kg. Is that too much weight on the oem racks w/thule carriers? how much does 1 snowboard weight(w/bindings), in general?

thanks

You should be good thats a 154lbs just make sure the height between the car and rack is high enough. If not your bindings will hit your roof.

i just had a look around on google and a good average weight to go on (well more top-side than average) is 15lbs for a board and the bindings (e.g. an '07 burton blunt (155) w/ custom bindings is 12lbs)

It's probably less influenced by the actual weight of the boards than the aerodynamics of the boards at speed. The weight should be pretty negligable, but especially if front wise-parallel with the roof, the up/down aero effect could be severe at highway speed, as boards tend to curve up at the end. That said, I've had no problems on several cars far exceeding the rack specs with multiple kayaks.. I once had 3 fully inflated commercial Aire whitewater raft's on a e36 3-series (~500lbs, + insane drag).. no problems. Factory roof rack specs are very lowball, but do take into account the massive effect of draft from opposing traffic and wind resistance on said objects. I'm totally certain that the load that you mentioned will be OK as long as you stay within hwy speeds and secure the boards well.

The way the BMW/Thule rack design is, you will only be able to hold 2 boards back to back in each set of racks. You could probably do 2 sets of racks (not roof support system, the actual rack itself) to hold 4 boards.

The real question is how you plan on fitting 4 people and all their gear into your car. I went with a buddy of mine, and between the two of us, we had a full car with the two boards on top of the car...

Hey..thanks for all the replies. yeah, If I used the OEM BMW carrier setup, I could only hold 2 boards one on each side. With the THule 725 flat bed carrier I can manage to hold 4 total on top. .
By the way, I will only have 2 or 3 ppl(including myself) in the car, cause we have a few cars going and I opted to carrier some of the boards since I have the setup.

thanks
