My 1st RWD car

I was just thinking today that the e92 is going to be my first RWD car that I own. All my other cars have been FWD (toyota, honda, acura....) I know both cars drive different. Just wanted to know if there are any driving dynamics i should be aware of?

Less likely to get front end "plow", but manufacturers still prefer to have a car that mildly understeers than oversteers for safety reasons. You will notice, and appreciate, the balance of the Bimmer.

The FWD's can't hold a candle compared to RWD cars in handling. I owned the best FWD car ever, the 1999 Integra Type R and I tracked it....

RWD cars are awesome, you should spend some time at a race track to learn it. FWD cars just plow into a corner, you get understeer pretty much 100% of the time.

With RWD cars, you can have understeer, neutral, oversteer and throttle steering, with everything dependent on your right foot.....

A new world for you.....just don't crash entering it :rocks:

the biggest difference to me is that the wheel doesn't want to "pull" back to center (as much) while accelerating through a turn. From a Toyota, the steering won't feel too light and should feel more precise.

It'll probably redefine what you think is possible with a car, handling-wise...you'll probably push your own limits before you reach the car's. You will come to appreciate that rear wheel drive just makes sense; acceleration causes you to gain more traction rather than lose it. A car that doesn't steer, accelerate, brake, and turn all with the same wheels just feels so much better.

What he said.

And whatever you do, do not press the DTC/DSC button until you're more familiar with you and your car's capabilities and limits.

i think the change will be alot easier for you because ur already pretty careful with ur driving in turn and whatnot with your FWD so you will slowly build more "gut" and u will start hitting corners faster and faster

Front end plowing is understeer.

To the OP: go find some snow and a large parking lot, get DTC mode on, and get ready for a lot of fun.

RWD owns ALL!

The best part of having RWD is throwing that ass-end out around a corner. Use to do it all the time in my truck, I shocked so many people who were surprised I could handle my truck as though it were the size of a 3er. Although, it being lowered helped with handling too. It was also one-wheel-peel.

I remember one 45 degree rounded turn that was on campus back in college. I always took that thing faster and faster. I topped it out at 70 one day and decided I better slow down b/c I was being stupid.

You'll really appreciate RWD once you learn how to really use it.

Here's a link from 5th Gear of Vicki showing the handling differences b/w AWD, RWD and FWD.

I use to be an instructor at the track, you will definitely have a tendancy if you have driven nothing but FWD cars.....

In FWD cars, as you understeer entering a corner, most people tend to continue to keep turning and giving it a higher steering angle......eventually you slow down enough, the front wheels grip and off you go..... Very few cases where FWD drivers counter steer.

In RWD cars as you enter a corner, sometimes you will understeer in which case the above scenario applies but in some cases you oversteer and I have seen many people not know how to counter steer to correct the oversteer because they have driven nothing by FWD cars.....and some that do try to counter steer correct too much....

You need to learn to just give it enough of a correction without overcompensation.....

Learn at a track......

so what your saying is to go light with my steering and control my speed going into the turn

Well of course not.

That's why I was saying once you learn the fundamental of your car and feel like doing it once in a while. I'll hit the button once when I get comfortable and when I'm comfortable with that I'll turn off the whole system. I never drove like I mentioned when I thought I would endanger someones life. I chose opportune times to do so.

Once you've had RWD for a while you won't want to switch, unless you have to of course.

Enjoy it!

Yes...don't give the steering wheel too much input in a RWD car - you have been able to get away with this in a FWD car

Also, I hope that you can get to a track and pick up some skills / instincts.... Can't do it by text mate....

You will absolutely love RWD. I have always had RWD or AWD till my most recent FWD. I miss RWD so bad, I can't wait to get the back end loose.... on the 335, nothing funner than a nice controlled wicked slide.
I agree with the above post, in taking it to the track to get to know what it is like.
