electrical whine - is this normal?
Curious if anyone knows if this is normal or experiences the same thing....
I have a new e91 (about 2 weeks old). When I unlock the car and interior lights and door handle lights go on, but haven't turned the engine on yet, it makes a high-pitched whinning sound. It is loud enough to hear very clearly when parked in a garage away from street noise. I presume it continues when the car is running, but it is not audible above the running engine. I have never noticed a sound like this with my past Audis, and my husbands X5 doesn't do this. It bothers me a little, but mostly because I'm not sure the car should be making this sound. If it is normal, I can live with it. Any insights would be helpful. thanks |

it's the fuel pump, if the noise you're hearing is what I think it is.
basically you're hearing the fuel pump increasing the pressure in the fuel lines so the car will start up more smoothly. I think others might be able to explain this better, but that's the general idea.. |

Thanks for the additional thread. I don't think any of those explain it -- maybe the fuel thing, but there is not enough info in the thread to know for sure. It is not the dash sound mentioned (I've heard that too, but it's not what I am referring to now), and it's not the cooling system fan since it happens before I've even driven the car - and it is a definite whine sound, rather than a fan.
Glad to at least know others seem to hear something similar, but if anyone knows more about what it actually is, that would still be helpful... |
