OP - If it's of any comfort, you can have the worlds best and most expensive anti-theft/alarm/keyless entry system, and if someone wants it they will get it. They can put the car on rollers and pull it up a flat bed and tow it away; then spend time getting into the vehicle at their leisure.
Enjoy all the car tech and the comfort of vehicle insurance, just hope that if anything ever did happen your insurance doesn't go after you for fraud because they think an immobilizer/comfort access like system makes a car 'unstealable'

Comfort Access is smart enough to detect when the fob is actually in the car verses near it. For example, it won't let you start the car if it detects that the fob is outside of the car and it won't let you lock the car if it detects that the fob is inside the car. The latter's pretty cool BTW. If you put the fob in the trunk and then close the trunk lid, the lights will flash, the horn will beep, and the trunk will pop back open. What I don't know is if the car detects the fob location based on signal strength or if there's a separate RFID. If it's based on signal strength alone, it may indeed be vulnerable.

If someone wants my car bad enough, they can go ahead and take it. That's why we have insurance. I'm gonna loose any sleep over someone trying to jack my RFID singal.

Another situation, once the car is running (not just BMW but many other manufacturers to) the car does not need the FOB. So you get in your car and start it with the FOB on you, thief comes, they clobber you and toss you out of the car. They can drive as far as gas will let them with no FOB. Then do whatever they want to the car after that, steal parts, chop it up, find another way to start it.
I dont know if anyone else has seen the new Chevy commercial with the 2 guys standing @ the car calling his wife getting on the plane, and the wife starts the car, flashes the lights, and unlocks the car from her phone! This looks like a recipe for disaster and will make it easier for thieves to steal that vehicle. Basically, if someone wants to steal your car bad enough, no matter what make/model it is, they will get it somehow! |

All proximity devices are vulnerable. Some payment cards use this technology as do some ID cards. I received one that came with a foil cover that I was instructed to remove only when I need to use the card (seems to defeat the purpose).
Secondary anti-theft devices are not expected by thieves so they may help as can lojack devices. In the end no security system is fool proof. Parking in secure places helps but if one is limited to parking in the most secure garages, it rather defeats the purpose of having a car. The pro's who have the tools to defeat the security systems are looking for a particular car. They do not act on impulse. They are looking for a pattern. Long term parking at an airport, parking outside at your home or a family member's home and of course at work. The more you change your pattern, the safer you are. This applies to protection from kidnapping and robbery too. |
