DSC Malfunction!

Last night, I slid on the road and hit a curb goin about 25, just a scratch on my bumper and the alignment is messed up. I was driving today and the DSC malfunction light came on. How much could this cost to fix?? and what can be the problem?

Going to cost more than you think. You will probably need to make an insurance claim.

Hard to say how much this will cost...

My guess is you did some minor suspension damage when you hit that curb, and the DSC is having difficulty because of the mis-alignment of the wheels. If you damaged the lower control arms you should be able to get everything fixed for under 1k - even at a dealer.

Just my $.02

Yea the DSC error is a result of your mis alignment. I wouldn't say it's just your control arms but I would NOT keep driving your car like this.

You can further stress other components and damage more than what was originally bent/broken.

I'll bet money that you bent a tie rod. Bent tie rod = misalignment = DSC error. If the car can not calculate which way your wheels are turned then it throws its stability correction algorithm for a loop and you get the error. Tie rod replacement is a DIY job. Replace the tie ride, measure the number of threads showing on the opposite side, then take it in for alignment.

You're assuming it's just the tie-rods.

Depending on how much is messed up, this can cost as little as a couple hundred, but if your description is correct, I've got to assume it's going to require replacing MORE than just the tie-rods. The tie-rods are made of high tensile strength steel. The upper and lower control arms are made of aluminum. those will bend long before the tie-rods bend. Meaning that if you have tie-rod damage as suspected, at least one of your control arms are bent too.

If this cost less than $800 to fix I would be surprised.

I posted this on a similar thread, but I think it still applies...

In my e39 5er I slid on ice into a curb - probably about 20MPH. It knocked the alignment out and required I replace some lower suspension components. The work was completed by my local indy shop with BMW parts for less than $500.

As an example for cost, the BMW sourced M3 front control arm kit (something I am drooling over quite heavily) is available from HP Autowerks for $443.99 http://www.hpashop.com/product.sc?pr...categoryId=175. Real OEM lists the parts for the e90 (non M) at $236.08.

Go get it checked out. You will have to pay to fix this, but it shouldn't be through the nose.

E39 front suspension is quite a bit cheaper than E9X front suspension, believe it or not. There's two more control arms on the front on the E9X plus they're all aluminum vs. mostly high tensile strength steel on the E39. Parts and replacement procedure on the E9X is more complicated too, although only marginally but it will potentially add a couple of work units, meaning at least another hour charged on top of what the E39 costs are.

PLUS, there are a lot of variables with regards to what is and is not damaged. I still stand by my statement that if the repairs come out for less than $800 I will be SHOCKED.

Tischer has pretty good prices. I replaced all my tie rods, control arms, tension arms, stabilizer links, etc. on my xi and I think it came to about $800 or so. And it's a total DIY project. Not hard at all. To remove and replace all components shouldn't take more than 4 hours total. Hardest part is getting the TRE out of the knuckle, IIRC. I think, though not sure, you can get the "old" performance suspension from Tischer for about $400 and it includes tensions struts and control arms and bushings. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462

I find that hard to beleive. Alignment can be in spec even if components are bent.....

I had $1500 worth of damage sliding into a curb at 25mph....wheel bearing and control arm had to be replaced as well as a few other components.
