328 vs 330?
I don't usually make flaming-calling threads like this one, but I really wanted to find out.
Few days ago, I had a chance to run with a 328 coupe at a local road. We couldn't do it because of the traffic ahead and the area being known for police playground. We did play around a "little". Keeping the safe distance with traffic front of us, we floored it(for like 2~3sec) and stuff. It seemed like the 328 was just as fast as my 330i. (we both step) I know the power difference is minimal so it should be very close, but given equal driver and condition, would the 330i have a definite advantage over the 328 it terms of straightline acceleration? p.s: I did search and didn't find what I wanted to know. If you have a link, please post. I'll delete the thread asap.

it would be interesting to see a 328i dyno. Because on paper, the difference of 25hp and 20 tq should still mean something.

youd be surprised how much of a horsepower advantage a car needs to quickly pull on a car from a roll. You need even more of an adv if the other car gets the jump on you as well. Id say if both of you took your cars to the strip and had a pro drive each one back to back, you would see the 330 consitently quicker...but in the end, in the real world, ~25hp difference isnt HUGE.

My only insight on the 328i vs 330i if they are both sedan and autos is the 328i is lighter than the 330i on average by 40-50lbs.. So it brings the difference down a little.
But it does take a lot of HP to pull on another car, the other night I went to the drag strip with the E350 and one of my fellow Mercedes benz forum members who has a C350. We both have the same 268hp V6 along with the 7 speed transmission, but the C350 weight about 300lbs less yet in the 1/4 mile it was a drivers race and it all came down to the launch. But I will say his car did trap 1 mph higher than me. |

Also, the 328i has shorter gearing and smaller brakes (less rolling mass) which helps to even things out.

I'll take an 06 330 over and 07 328, since 06 owners already took most of the depreciation hit and 330 got more HP n most other goodies

i've driven both; as i have a 328i, and my friend has a 330
however, mines the coupe, his is the sedan, so e92 v.s e90 now don't go flaming me with insults, but my 328i was def faster... in the beginning. the 328i once you go up to higher speeds just stops accelerating, the e90 keeps going. both were manuals, driven by me on the same piece of flat straight road one right after the other, a couple of times. and when my friend and i drove side by side (we did it once with me driving his car, him mine, and then vice versa). right off the bat, the 328 is in fact quicker, both times, but the 328 falls behind and the 330 takes over. however, its not till pretty high speeds, and up till then both cars are you could say "neck to neck" aka in regular driving conditions its a non issue 328 vs 330. however, sedans have been known to be slower than coupes from my understanding, so the 328i sedan, might be slower than the 330/ so thats just my experience, im not putting it across as fact. but 330 owners can feel free to call me a liar and declare how you know for a fact that the 330 is quicker in every which way. (no offense, but in every topic in the past about this, you've been quick to refute, and quite angrily) Last edited by wnston1127; 02-18-2007 at 09:15 AM.. |
