Calling all 2007 non-idrive e90 owners! Need your help.
I have an 07 e90 with the BMW Professional non idrive radio. I brought in to BMW today because the volume knob will do something that I think is abnormal. I feel that it has a short. I will have the radio up at a good volume and have to turn the knob down quickly to answer my phone. (no bluetooth) Well, it will sometimes go down then go up abruptly. This only happens when I turn the knob fast. I tried to duplicate this in the 328 loaner that I got with the Professional radio and I could not get it to happen. They took the car and called me at about 5pm tonight. My SA told me that BMW said it is perfectly normal. I told him that I could not get it to do it in the 2011 loaner that I got, but I can do it almost every time in my 2007. I even showed him upon dropping it off. He then tells me that the 2011 has a completely different radio and that BMW says that it is normal. I disagreed and told him that if he can find another 2007 e90 on the lot that does this, then I will accept that my radio was designed this way. He told me to come back on January 26th to talk to a rep that will inspect this. I have a feeling I will not get too far. So I need a little help from the people with 2007 e90's with the Professional non idrive radio. Will you take 2 minutes and try this with your radio and respond with your results? This would be a great help so I can show the SA if this is not happening to other owners. Please respond only if you have a 2007 e90 with the non idrive Professional radio. Your help and responses will be much appreciated!

I don't have an 07, but that really doesn't sound normal. Not sure if it's a short, but it sounds like something is wacky with the knob. Good luck getting them to repair it for you.

I have a 2007 e90 non-idrive and I couldn't duplicate what you were saying. Granted I only tried a couple times. I will try again today.

I've noticed this as well. If I seem to turn the knob up or down very quickly it will skip. It also does this for the other knob as well. ie. I try to change a track from 3-8. I spin it very quick and it'll jump to an outrageous number. Just gotten used to it now, diddn't know it was a problem

I have a 2006 e90 non-idrive and I have experienced the same issue, but with the tuner knob, not the volume knob. Just as you mentioned, it happens to me when I try to spin the knob quickly. I assume this is a fault since it only happens on one knob and not both, but I haven't bothered with it since most of the functions are duplicated elsewhere. It still pisses me off though when I am forced to use it. I haven't talked to BMW service but I think they would make us buy a whole new head unit ($$$) to replace those stupid knobs. Does anybody know if this is a service/maintenance topic?

I talked to BMW again yesterday. They told me to bring it in since a BMW "rep" would be there that could look at it. Well, I showed him what happened and I showed him that the volume jumps up even if I don't turn it too fast. I also have had my radio reset the settings. I always leave it on CD and it will reset to 89.3 on the tuner and all the bass and treble settings on all sources will be back to zero. It actually happened in front of the SA so he knew I wasn't BSing. Well, he tells me that the volume knob thing is normal (which I can assure you it is not since I have gotten a chance to try to duplicate this on many BMW professional radio's since my first post and could not). But he said I may get a new radio anyway since the radio resets the settings. So I have an appointment for this Wednesday. I can almost bet that he is going to say it is due to aftermarket lights or something completely not tied to the same circuit as the radio. I now I get to go on a mission to put on the OEM tails and interior lights. Hopefully you guys get an SA that isn't so protective about warranty repairs. His standpoint is almost as if he will get fired for trying to help me get this fixed. Oh and the kicker.... He told me it was normal. So I told him that I will accept that as an answer if he can duplicate on any BMW of his choice. He was silent. But still refused to do anything.

Can't duplicate this on me '05 E90 or my '07 E92 325. However if you turn it really fast sometimes it doesn't lower the volume as much i would like it to

When you turn a Digital controlled knob that fast it will do what you are saying... Just DO NOT turn it so fast; Problem solved. |

Me too. This is the first one in 13 years that I have seen, other than defective ones. I have probably owned 20 stereos and installed 500+. (I was an installer for about 8 years at Best Buy) Its not like I'm spinning the knob super fast. Just quickly so that I can get to my phone. I do not have bluetooth in the car so I have to use a Jawbone. Not trying to argue your statement with the digital knob, but if I can't replicate this on 3 different loaners with digital knobs, turning it obnoxiously fast, then it isn't by design. And to really be honest, its not that I am too stubborn to turn it slower, its that I know its there and it bothers me. Sometimes it will do it when I turn the knob slow too. Just intermittently. Oh well.
