iPod Classic or iPod Touch

Now that I'm getting a BMW with iPod capability, I'm thinking of replacing my old MP3 player with either an iPod Classic 160GB or an iPod Touch 32GB.

I understand that the iPod has a hard drive and the Touch has flash memory.

I don't really care about the WiFi capability and viewing movies on the Touch since I can do that on my Smartphone.

So I guess my question is - which is better for mobility and less resistant to temperature changes that would be seen inside a car?

Obviously, the iPod would be more sensitive to jolts, etc., due to moving parts vs. flash memory.

What is everyone's opinions?

ipod classic seems very dated now...why not get the touch, I know you don't need all the functions that come along with it but it's there if you need it.

True.

I would really be buying it for strictly listening to music in the BMW and at the gym, so I wasn't sure if there were more features of the iPod that are geared towards listening to music (such as creating playlists, etc.), than with the Touch.

to be honest man if this ipod is mostly going to be used for driving only, i feel that the ipod classic would be the best. i have an itouch and its so hard browsing for songs i want to listen to while using the itouch. when i had the ipod classic i felt that it was so much easier to browse for songs or change songs while driving

why not just get a nano? it'll be much better for the gym and be less clutter in the car

Depends on how much you download music, I got the touch because I dont need but a few thousand songs and you can see it better driving to change the song.

this!
I've tried every iPod in the car and i've found that the smaller, the more things you can fit in the center console

a Nano does an excellent job for cars.
You won't be using the iPod's actual interface, but BMW's. And you'll keep it in the center console which is where you put your gum and all that stuff.. you don't want that small console to be taken up all by iPod + wires

big iPods tend to bend the wires in a bad way in order to fit. I had to replace my iPod wire (150$) twice because of my iPod classic.
I got a nano and never been happier!

Classic. Mine rarely leaves the car and the capacity is 160GB (more than any other model). If you're just playing music, I find the touch to be annoying.

Awesome. These were the kind of opinions I was hoping to get.

I had thought about the Nano - but then when you're jogging on a treadmill at the gym, some kind of a display to search through the music is helpful.

You're thinking about the iPod Shuffle.

+1 on the nano, I have to go running and stuff like that. its the best iPod for general use. I did buy a 120gig classic 2 years ago and I keep that in the car as my music source. But if I could only buy 1, it would be the nano

Classic - if you don't care about app capability might as well get the most memory possible. They're bullet proof, too. I've kept the same ipod classic in my car (they weren't called classic when I bought it) for years and its never failed in any temperature.

The nano is pretty cool but I'd rather have the classic because it has some substance to it. It's like the difference between a purse dog and a retriever.

I went with a Classic for that exact reason.

Thanks everyone.

I just got back from buying the Classic. The iPod Touch is nice, but I couldn't justify the additional cost for the options that I'll never use.

The Nano is kind of cool, but the tiny display was irritating after a while. LOL

I have a classic, because I have months of music and it would take 5 "touches" to work that out... so if you are a minor music person but want to look cool, get the touch. otherwise get the classic and fill it up.

I have the nanao because the classic doesn't support Nike+, which I enjoy using at the gym. Mine will have been in my car for a year next week and it still works great.

Update on an extended connector:

I found this on EBAY, ordered it, just got it in the mail today, hooked it up in the BMW and it works perfectly!

Go either touch or classic. I think they might sound slightly better than the nano in the car. It's really a toss up, I don't think you'll outlast the classics hdd life.
