I am planning to sell my stockies since it is just taking up room in my garage. I have a potential buyer but he lives in Michigan. What is the cheapest and most effective way to ship the stock wheels + tires? They weigh about 110 pounds.

cheaply, you can always mega-wrap the wheels and tires in industrial plastic wrap, slap a ups label on them, and send them on their way. insurance would be necessary just in case.

I've heard of people using Greyhounds buses, that's probably the cheapest way, I've never looked into it personally though

You live in San Francisco, I am guessing.

If you were shipping it to SoCal instead of "across the country", all you had to do was write the address of the recipient on the inside face of the rims with a Magic Marker and roll 'em down I-5 one by one

i have actually bought and sold...IIRC about $220 to ship via FEDEX ground....you can put the dimensions and weight in on their website and it will give you a price

put a piece of cardboard on the face of the wheel and the back of the wheel (make sure it covers the entire area minus the tires). Take industrial saran wrap and wrap all around the wheel in all directions. Make sure it's tight and holds the cardboard in place. Drop off or get it picked up by fedex/ups.

I used this method on 4 rims+tires (18") and it was roughly $120 at fedex

I use this method as well. no complaints from any buyers. fedex is also cheaper than UPS to ship wheels from my experience of price shopping.

Honestly have no idea how UPS is still in business for regular consumer parcel service. They are consistently overpriced, their service sucks, and their offices (which are franchises) are always in some dirty-ass corner of town and employ really seedy people. You never know if they are going to ship your package, or steal it's contents when you drop it off.

I know they have huge deals with dish network/dell, etc. to handle equipment returns, but for shipping a document/envelope/box, etc... FedEx is the ONLY option for me.

For the average joe shipping something as heavy and bulky as wheels it gets pretty expensive using UPS or FedEx. I too have heard about people using ground hound buses, and it usually less expensive than UPS or FedEx.

UPS gives the best deals to companies, If you think about it Tirerack shipped me tires and wheels for $35.00 for 4 which is not bad.

A company I worked for use to let its employee use it corporate UPS account to ship personal items. You take it to the shipping department they would weight and measure it tell you the cost and you would just cut the company a check for the amount.

Anyone you know have a FedEx or UPS account? They get good rates.

I sold my 4 stock tires on this forum last year and it turned out that USPS was cheaper than both FedEx and UPS (the latter 2 were within a couple bucks of each other). This was shipping from Chicago to...somewhere in CA so it's close to what you're doing distance-wise. I basically just bought a roll of heavy shrink wrap and wrapped the crap out of each tire (individually). Each tire was shipped separately, but the post office will take them.
