335i Consuming Oil
I have been reading the posts on this forum for awhile now, and have been able to get a lot of good information.
I was wondering if other 335i are also consuming oil, and if so how much. I leased my 335 back in October, and have driven just over 5000 miles. The add 1 quart light just went off and I added a quart of BMW oil. I then called the service department at my dealer (Open Road Edison NJ). He stated that normal consumption for the 335 is ˝ to 1 quart of oil every 1500 to 2000 miles. That seems a little high to me. Thanks, Tom P.S. This car Rocks :rocks: |

I just hit 3000 miles and my oil is at the middle.
At 1000, i was down to 3/4ths, and then around 1.5k i hit middle, so it seems to be holding steady right now. |

Around 5500 I noticed my oil meter was almost in the middle. I didn't get a "add quart" light but I topped it off just the same - that was back in January - and so far I haven't lost any oil since then.
Picked my car up back in Oct. '06 and I drive about 60 miles daily to/from work so it sees a lot of road - unfortunately (in terms of miles added; other than that I love driving this car!)

I had to add a full quart @ 2500 miles. I am now just over 5,000 and it looks like I am down another 1/2 quart... consumption has slowed a bit from break-in period, but it is still drinking oil.
I don't commute to work, so my car is really just a big "toy". When I take it out, it has to earn it's keep, if you know what I mean. I suppose driving > 4,000 RPM with frequent trips to 6500 has a lot to do with my oil consumption. |

I also leased mine in october..I currently have 5500 miles on the clock, and just this past friday my warning light came on stating "Oil level is below the minimum level" I took it to BMW to have them add oil and was told basically the same thing that you were.

Engines consume some oil. All of them. Some types more than others, some specific engines more than others of the same type. Some so little as to be almost immeasurable. But they all use some, and if they did not the rings and cylinder walls would destroy each other in short order.
In the world of dipsticks and 3,000 mile quack lube changes this reality is masked. But this car tries to run 15K+ and has a dash indication of oil level. You can expect to put in a quart from time to time, and none of the consumption rates mentioned in this thread are unreasonable. OK, this is the Internet. Who the h*ll am I? There are a lot of egos running around in BMW land, and I don’t really want to spew forth a resume that can not be confirmed. So don’t trust me, but seek out those you know who have some knowledge of these things (scars on hands, oil stained garage floor, big tool box/s). They will tell you the same thing. On a long oil change interval you will probably be adding some oil. This is not bad, and in fact has some benefits. When it gets to a quart/liter per 1,000 miles, then you need to start asking some questions. Below 750, then panic. |

Some engines will burn some oil that is more noticeable than other engines just a fact of owning a bimmer.

I think every 7500 miles changing the oil when running full synthetics is the right way to do it. While my vehicle is leased I am planning on keeping it at the end. So I want to make sure I really take care of this powerplant. Please advise on what you think about when to change oil at what intervals? -Thanks

Intervals....there are lots of threads that recommend different intervals. Just hit oil change in the search category. Here's one to take a look at... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ght=oil+change One says @ 7,000, others say @ 15,000 as instructed. You're call. I prefer to go before the recommended intervals but that's me. Good luck.

On one hand I have no doubt that the vast majority of cars will make 100k on the BMW system. On the other, my (wife’s) car does some local driving and the BMW oil life monitor does not appear to penalize for that. Plus the few 15k oil analyses that have been posted looked a bit too done for my taste. And finnally I want some margin for all those things that are not supposed to happen but do from time to time (crankcase ventilation problems, contamination, etc.). To each his own in these things. Since I keep my cars past 100k I tend to error on the side of over maintenance. |

I added a quart at about 3000 and am low again (currently at 9800). I think someone sneaks out at night and puts miles on for me, it's only 6 months old now. I think I'm just going to have the dealer do a change for me at 10k.

I'm at almost 5 months, 3077 miles, and the indicator is on the "max" line. I'm amazed that it has used so little oil.
