For those with euro headlights...

What would happen if you got into an accident and smashed one of them? Would the dealer order one from Europe or would you have to find one yourself? Since they're not dot compliant would you be screwed. I'm hopeful I don't have to ever worry about it, but have always been curious.

Strictly speaking your dealer should refuse to offer you a non DOT
compliant part because they are liable. But with a bit of good will,
things can happen. The insurance company certainly won't pay for
the European part - they'll only cough up the money for the US part
and if there is a difference, it will come from you.

I am pretty sure you will have to get one on your own.

That would suck. Most people on this forum think it's too expensive to buy one set of euros, imagine having to buy two sets.

They are euro/world market OEM parts...but not US spec OEM parts.

Why is it that the E92 comes with clear lights, but the E90 doesn't because it is not DOT compliant? Can someone explain? Euro lights look so much better. What is not DOT compliant about them? What's different with the E92's?

The E92 is compliant with the DOT regulations by putting two amber reflectors at the bumper. This reflector is absent from models outside North America.

Department of Transportation (DOT) requires US cars to have a yellow (amber) reflector in the front of the vehicle. Most auto makers will either put this reflector within the headlight housing, or somewhere on the front bumper/fender.

The E90 go it in the headlight housing...which has proven to be impossible to get rid of, unless you change to non-US headlight

The E92 go it on the fender just above the front tires...which has proven to be ultra-easy to get rid offor E92 owners but for me.

So let's say that a car blows out my left headlight. Insurance pays to have damage fixed and the dealer orders a euro headlight to match my other one. Even though it's not dot compliant, they'll do it because I'll slap some amber reflecters on the bumper with 3M. Am I right?

Maybe? Most times the dealer isn't the person fixing your car. When my car was involved in a accident I wanted to take it to the dealer but they didn't do accident repairs. I then took it to a 3rd party collision shop. They had to replace a blackline which isn't a stock US part(optional), but they still ordered it, due to it was something I paid to add on to the car. On my past car I had my rims replaced by an insurance company that were aftermarket due to being bent/blown out in a highway construction site.

Those 2 points make me think that since I paid to add on the euro headlights they are now covered under my insurance. Even if they weren't, most times you take the car to a 3rd party shop that knows nothing about the standards of the car and the insurance company just sees a bill. If it were me I would tell them I added them on, the dealer installed them(which they did for me) and I want them replaced. Then to pull the part# of the housings and order them since there what I paid for. I would be especially pushy if the accident was not my fault, if it were my fault I'd try my hardest to get them replaced but if they wouldn't then it would still be my fault since I broke them.

Could work, but I would think it'd be really hard for someone to order that part from Europe. I think you have to have a European business liscence or something.

I dunno about that. I do know the body shop had to order parts left and right straight from Germany, cuz none of the dealerships carry half the parts to put the car back together in the event of an accident.
