can i hook up the Deltran battery tender clamps to the jump point and ground under the hood?

or does it need to be connected directly to the battery?

Under the hood should be fine. My 08 didn't have a ground under the hood, so I just connected it to a piece of plastic. Not sure how the Battery Tender(plus,jr etc.) will handle it though.

-=H|I=-, I am confused.

What exactly did you connect to a piece of plastic?

That will work perfectly. My car has been sitting in the garage for a few weeks. I am putting a battery tender on it tomorrow.

Yea you can't connect one end to plastic...the circuit needs to be closed which means both ends need to be connected to something on the chassis.

The positive lead needs to be connected to the positive pole of the battery and negative lead needs to be connected to the negative lead of the battery.

Since the jump point under the hood is connected to the positive lead of the battery and the negative lead of the battery is connected to the chassis of the vehicle (i.e "ground") connecting the positive lead to the jumper lead and the negative lead to the chassis will complete the circuit and charge the battery, Of course the red plastic cap on the jump lead will have to be romoved since it is an electrical insulator.

It must not have been plastic then.....plastic will not conduct electricity and won't complete the circuit.

That's all? The original battery in my 1999 Honda Valkyrie Interstate has lasted almost 12 years now on a Tender every Winter.

HotIce, just for the record:

Metal = CONDUCTOR

Plastic = INSULATOR

Could not have worked. You need to ground to metal. The tender may show a red light lit but that is because you are hooked to the hot lead (jump point) under the hood. In order to charge the battery you need to have a proper ground. Plastic is not a ground no matter what you think you're seeing. Ground it properly under the hood and you will be good to go.
