You ought to use Premium grade octane... not sure what that is in Canada, but in the US we got 93, or 91 depending on the state.

Why? Did it sound like a good idea at the time?

Just go with the higher grade. Why risk it.

For the 335, 91 is recommended although the manual states 89 is OK.
All you're going to do is lose some power since the ECU will retard timing to prevent knocking. Seems a bit silly to me. 87 seems too low though. According to the manual, you may damage your engine. I can only assume that the ECU can't compensate for the knock at this low an octane. I still don't understand why you would put in 87 gas on purpose.

You are lucky because in Hawaii and California I have not found any gas without the 10% blend.

I live in NJ, and i use shell.... Hence me putting in 93. their is 83 -89 -93.... I'm sure not going to use 89 on my 45K+ bmw. And even if their was 94+ octane i would stick with 93.

In Idaho the highest octane pump gas is 91 unless you get it with 10% Ethanol. Then it is 93 octane. What is best to use (and why) when given this choice?

87 is not OK for the 335, but it is OK for the 328.
The owner's manual states that 89 is the minimum for a 335, however, 91 is the recommended minimum. Why split hairs in a non-CA state? Just put the 93 in the tank. There are many Japanese cars which like the 328, premium is recommended, but 87 is ok. The knock sensor can retard the timing. Again, 87 is not OK on a 335. 89 is the minimum. |

Have you read the manual? If not, please, for the sake of all us, do so.

I found thay my 335 runs slightly better (faster by .2 - .4 secs repeated tests 10 - 100 mph) on 93 than on 91. No idea why. It also seems to take awhile, i.e., 100 miles or so, for the transition. Is there an adaptive adjustment of the ECU?

As others have said, it's well worth the extra $5 per fill-up for your CAD$60k car.

I suppose the ECU could advance the timing until it detects knock giving a little more power with 93. Remember there is no more energy in 93 than 91. The octane rating is simply a measurement of resistance to detonation (knock).
