This is not a fair comparison but I have driven:
1. my E90 330i manual ZSP 2. loaner E60 525i automatic, no ZSP The base auto E60 handles quite differently. It is stable and competant, and has a much smoother ride. It would make a very comfortable commuter car and road trips would be great. It was not sporty at all, though -- kind of like a Toyota Camry. Not as sporty as a Honda Accord EX, even. I'm sure the E60 sport pkg and more powerful engine choices change all that.

I would think if both have the same engine and set up the E90 would be quicker and better handling.

I got a 525i once as a loaner. Had it for a day, and drove it around a bit. It's noticeably bigger and the suspension is noticeably softer. It's absolutely still a very competent car in the handling department, but it's also obvious that the car is designed with about as much emphasis on luxury as on sport (whereas the 3's setup defaults a bit more towards sport than luxury).
When I returned the car, I was much happier to be back in the 3. Because it's smaller, you feel much more like you're 'wearing' the car, whereas in the 5er, it just feels like you're sitting in the car.

Before buying I drove:
530i 330xi The only difference being the 3 was slightly more nimble and stiffer. I like the cozy and just right feeling I get in a 3 series; however, the E60 design has my heart. The E9x to me is a confused bastard child trying to be two things at once (simple and elegant mixed with radical lines of the E65 and 60). |

That would be fun to see the E90 335 vs. E60 535Xi.

No question the 3er is more nimble in handling than a 5er. I've driven both extensively, used to have a 5er, and am prob. getting a 550i with the new SP.
Lots of good reasons to get both, esp. since they are fixing a few details on the 5ers styling which I didn't like, and redoing the interior. But you can't get options like HUD and night vision on a 3er and it's time for a V8 anyway.

The 5er is a great motorway crusier, but it was too big for me and after 8 months I was bored. The 3er is far better, get rid of the run flats and you have an awesome all round package.
