F1 - 6 Colors to Differentiate Tires

From formula1.com

http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...1/3/11829.html
Quote:
Italian tyre manufacturers Pirelli, embarking on the first season of a three-year agreement to supply Formula One, have revealed the colours that will distinguish the six different types of rubber that will be used throughout 2011.

Each type will carry its own distinct colouring on the Pirelli and PZero logos affixed to the sidewall. Under the sport's rules, only two compounds of slick tyre - known as the prime and the option - will be used for each race. In addition to this, intermediate and wet tyres can be fitted if it rains.

The six colours are as follows:
Wet - orange
Intermediate - light blue
Super soft - red
Soft - yellow
Medium - white
Hard - silver

In order to make the differences between the prime and option tyre more pronounced, Pirelli's strategy is to offer a step of at least one compound between the tyres nominated for each race. If the track conditions require it though, this strategy may be revised.

The prime and option tyres for the first three Grands Prix of the year - Australia, Malaysia and China - will be hard and soft compounds, meaning that silver and yellow tyres will be first to make an appearance in Melbourne.

"We' re very excited by the prospect of returning to Formula One for the first time in 20 years, and we're aiming to be a proactive and colourful partner in Formula One,” commented Pirelli's Motorsport Director Paul Hembery. “So what better way to symbolise this than a brightly coloured selection of Pirelli logos to run on the sidewalls? These will enable both live and television audiences to tell at a glance who is on what compounds, which will be vital knowledge as tyres are set to form a key part of race strategy this year."

Pirelli is no stranger to brightly-coloured tyres: when the firm was previously involved in Formula One, the Benetton team was supplied with multi-coloured rubber to run as part of their ‘United Colors’ campaign back in 1986.

Why the hell didn't they choose an easier to understand color pattern following a spectrum instead of jumping around like retards. Some decision makers are really retarded.

I'm gonna need a few races to get used to the color. But for most of the races, we will only see red-white, or yellow-silver color combinations to indicate option-prime tires.

Not too sure how they pick the color for each compound. But its good to see something other than a stripe in the middle of the groove or on the side. Which was boring.

Previously Bridgestone only indicate the softer compound, we will have to go through formula one sites to see if they offer soft or super-soft as the option tire. Now we can tell immediately what exact compound Pirelli is offering for the race weekend.

Pirelli considers tweaking markings

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90326

Quote:
Pirelli is considering a tweak to its tyre marking system after difficulties distinguishing the colours over the Australian Grand Prix weekend.

Ahead of the race, Pirelli announced that its tyres would have different coloured lettering this year to distinguish their compound - with the soft (yellow) and hard (silver) being used in Melbourne.

But with teams finding it difficult at times to work out which colour tyres were in use when the cars were in action, Pirelli has promised to re-examine its plan.

"We are looking at the markings, particularly the silver and the white," Pirelli director of motorsport Paul Hembery said when asked by AUTOSPORT about the situation.

"I thought the yellow was very clear. Looking at the images throughout the race on the television screens, I don't think there was any doubt watching the cars with the yellow markings.

"But the silver? Yes. I think we need to work on that because it blurred a bit with the black. But if that is my biggest problem then I will be happy."

Rubens Barrichello was one of several leading figures who thought the colour system needing improving.

"The colours of the tyres, they don't differentiate what is going on. Pirelli need to do something for the spectators.

"If you have a frozen image you can see on the picture what it is. But, on a running car, you can't see what tyres someone is running. So imagine what it is like in the grandstand. It would be nice to do something different."

I've got it!!!

Ad space on the tires! flexible reusable OLED displays on the sidewalls synchronized to wheel speed, so the image always appears upright. Once tires are worn, unclip them and stick on the next set.

You laugh now, but if F1 exists in 15 years, I bet it could happen!

Pirelli adds stripe to soft tyres

http://en.espnf1.com/malaysia/motors...ory/45305.html

Quote:
Pirelli has introduced a gold stripe to the outer edge of its soft tyres to make it easier to differentiate between its two compounds.

After the first race in Australia it became apparent that, from certain camera angles, it was not always obvious which compound was being used. As a result Pirelli has taken a leaf from Bridgestone's book by painting the outer edge of the soft tyres' wall.

Autosport is reporting that a more permanent solution will be found for the European races and quoted Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery as saying: "We have obviously had a number of comments that people could not recognise the tyres, and the stripe is not an ideal solution. For Turkey, we will have a much stronger branding on the sidewall. We won't have the stripe; we will connect up the Pirelli and P-Zero wording with more bands of colour.

"It will mean that as it rotates, the black won't dominate. It will look like a turning circle of yellow - and be predominantly yellow in colour. We will do the same branding for all of the different compounds. From the testing we have done so far, it seems to work very well."

Hembery confirmed that three-stop strategies were likely in Malaysia this weekend, assuming the race stays dry.

"About the only thing you can rely on here is the fact that it will rain hard in the afternoon and because of this we expect our wet tyres to play a key role here," he added. "When it's dry, we expect the hard tyre to be well-suited to the conditions, as ambient temperatures are going to be a lot hotter than they were in Australia. Due to the aggressive surface that we have in Malaysia and the hot weather, we expect to see more pit stops: about three, which could increase to four if the teams have to change between wet tyres, which is more than likely."
