Had a run in with a 335I last night with my g35...people please chime in about this
Whats up,
As you all I know I am about to be picking up a 335i, most likely sedan. Well yesterday I got my 06g35 coupe back from the body shop ( got hit while parked at work) after waiting a whole month. I have to say i was happy to get my car back. Anyway after the gym i was driving my friend home when i seen a 335 coupe, so i caught up to him and we started hittin it a little bit, nothing crazy...then i pulled next to the kid and we were talkin for a minute. Cool kid btw if you on this site I had the white g35 coupe. Well let me tell you first that i do not street race, but its a very big 3 lane in each direction road and it was empty, so we both made a u turn and squared off at the light. I rolled my window down and said lets do it I wanna see how bad you really kill me, he told me was going to leave his traction on, and boom we were off. By 50mph i noticed that i was so far ahead he probably wasnt racing so i slowed down, when he pulled up he said his traction is killin him...so now we make another U turn and he says lets do it from a 20 Roll on his count. Heres the kicker now, from 20mph, 3 honks, our cars were almost DEAD even, he was slowly inching on me, that by the time i was in mid 4th gear i was at his rear bumper. Someone please tell me what the hell is up with that, I thought these cars are supposed to be beast. My car is an 06 g35 coupe 6mt with nothing but an injen cai, which does almost nothing to the car. He also told me his car was stick. I know alot of people are going to say he dont know how to drive, but from a roll, if the car is the much faster, no matter how much you suck the car is going to win. |

It was probably just like he said, traction. Getting traction down in these cars in a straight line (when flooring it) is very difficult. Look at all the guys with miserable 60' times and mediocre 1/4 mile times. As quick as this car is it has a pretty steep "launch" learning curve.
Was he on stock tires? Performance summers make a huge, huge difference. I know you're going to say "but once we were rolling he was barely pulling"; still; if he spun the tires when he took off from 20 it'd take more time to make up that lost time than you guys had in a race up to ~120. FWIW, I am sure he knew what he was doing; but I disagree about "even if you suck the car will win" thing you said near the end of your post. The 335i has a lot of grunt from 1400-5500 rpm, but up in the mid to high 5000's and onward it loses a lot of steam. If he was redlining it that could easily lose him a couple tenths, which is more than enough to keep you guys even. The 335i may be faster, but it's what, a half second in the 1/4 mile? That's a lot, but a good driver can more than make that up compared to a poor one. |

i actually ran my friends g35 coupe 6MT and he had an injen CAI. There was NO WAY he was at my rear bumper from 40-130. He was about 3-4 car lengths and i was still puling away. I dont know, could be traction like someone said, or ur a better driver.
P.S I dont condone street racing, so happened the road was empty. Travis

We need to be realistic. A stock 335i will not do low 13's @ 110mph. I mean, I guess it's possible, but it's not even close to what everyone has been running. I'd say 13.4 @ 105mph is way more realistic. A low 13 is possible with way better tires (like drag radials), but you're still not going to trap 110mph. Even guys with PROcede are just trapping 110mph. The PROcede makes the high end much better, but fact is a stock 335i loses a lot of steam over 5000rpm. I hate using mag times, but check them all out; the best 1/4 mile was 13.3 @ 106.1mph. Most were 13.5 @104-105.

Like others have said, it is most likely to be a driver error.
Keep in mind that your VQ engine is very good, and .5 -.7 difference is not a lot in the 1/4 mile

Id definitely say it was driver error because leaving on traction control is a major hinderance. Obviously he didnt know how the car would react or couldnt shift correctly thus not taking traction off. Even on a roll if the car detects any slide it will inhibit the throttle for about a second. Thats enough time for you to pull ahead and make ground. I also really hope you werent trying to run 1/4 on the street.

That said, you are really not going to notice that big of a difference in car lengths, GIVEN EQUAL DRIVERS. A car that averages high 13s (G35) and a car that averages lower to mid 13's (335i) could conceivably produce the results that this guy just described. Go watch races at the track. If a guy runs 13.8 and the other guy runs 13.3, you probably couldn't even tell who won, if there wasn't a clock that lights up their time or you were standing directly next the finish line, it's just not that big a margin! Throw inexperienced drivers into the equation and it's a coin toss. That's why I roll my eyes when I watch people throw away $600.00 on an exhaust, praying they go from a 13.8 to a 13.6. To each his own I guess |

It is very simple. I have a 335i coupe and i live in New york. Yesterday we had a high of 15F, these run flats are killing us at these cold temperatures, What happens is as soon as he slams on the gas the traction control kicks in, killing most of the power, and then you get a surge of power. It sucks really bad. Try it again this sat against a 335i coupe when its going to be 50F, and you definatly going to be suprised. I raced a g35 and a 350z at the airport strip in brooklyn, and they were left way behind.
Cold temperatures and our run flats = NO TRACTION |

For what its worth, those g35's are tail happy cars. I had a new sedan out for a couple test drives and the car was sideways the whole time. Those tires really have no traction plus their traction control is horribly power robbing. The front end litterally dives because the power is stopped that suddenly. Takes about 2 seconds for the power to come back on too.

No, i wasn't the one that raced him. But if he really believes that he came that close, i'll do a run.
I was just trying to expalin what could of happen to the 335i. Not making any excuses, i am just giving my .02c based on my racing experience. I am a pro race car driver for PDA for 5 1/2 years, and i also instruct for them during the summer. |
