New management responsibilities at BMW M GmbH and MINI brand

Friedrich Nitschke to head BMW M GmbH

Kay Segler takes over MINI brand management

Dr. Friedrich Nitschke (56) will take over as managing director of BMW M GmbH effective 1 May of this year. Nitschke was previously responsible for the MINI Series within the Development division, and has held various management positions in the Controlling and Development divisions since joining the company in 1978.

The current managing director of BMW M GmbH, Dr. Kay Segler (56), will be responsible for MINI brand management in the future. Segler has been with the company since 1988, mainly in management functions within the Sales and Marketing division, both in Germany and abroad. He previously managed the MINI brand between 2004 and 2008. He is now set to continue the brand’s successful growth story.

Turbo charging is now an integral feature with BMW and therefore BMW M.
It is here to stay because BMW need it to increase efficiency in their vehicles.

i have no problem with turbocharging, i got an X3 with the 35i engine for my wife and she loves it. great engine.
but i was under the assumption that M stood for ultimate driving machine
not Efficient driving machine
just like mercedes, sure they have bluetec, and they have diesels etc
but that doesn't mean every car they make has to be efficient etc
look at AMG

i mean if turbocharging is done across the board on ALL BMWs
why am i paying that much more for the M?
just for a different tune on the ECU?
so from now on the difference between an M and a non M is a different ECU tune and a sticker on the engine that says "powered by M power"?
such a shame

No offense. Given the product produced (especially the 1M, the first-ever so called M product that use a non-M engine and parts bin assembly) during Dr. Segler's M Dept. tenure, personally I consider Mr. Segler to be more suitable to run the MINI brand other than the more performance/technical oriented M brand. I totally support BMW's decision to put a person with technical background to run the M brand.

Look at Ford, before and after assigning a technical guy as CEO, big change, big improvement!

Scott, I think a lot of people, including myself, are afraid that if the M3 goes turbo, the high redline will no longer be there.

Believe it or not, my favorite thing about my M3 is the high redline and how power is delivered.

Please... Tell us the redline on the F3X M3 will be 8000 or more and that peak power will be delivered towards the end of the RPM range.

I know you probably can't say much right now, but is BMW working on getting a high RPM engine for the turbo M3? If you can, please confirm that high RPM is one of the goals even though it's going turbo.

Thanks Scott.

thank you scott!!
I said this to my friend 7 years ago; even before TT 335i was on the market.I mentioned that most cars will be turbocharged due to emission; he disagreed. Looks like I was right after all.

look at AMG
AMG is adding turbos to their line -__- The next E63 will have a V8 Biturbo as well as the S class sedan/coupe, SL, and C. I also think the next SLK will get a ~400 horse turbo'd V6. It's happening everywhere and I don't blame them. $4.20 avg/gallon of gas is no joke and it's still climbing
