Insurance
Does anyone here have their gear insured? Yesterday I went down pretty hard while walking down an embankment covered in loose rocks. Both my body and lens took a bit of a hit. The body has a couple of scratches but is otherwise OK. The lens hood got chewed up but the glass is fine other than getting covered in dust. Everything tested out fine afterward but it got me thinking about insurance. It would have cost me around $4,000 to replace that gear if it had been broken.
I think my renter's insurance will at least partially cover the gear but I'm wondering if I should look into a specialized policy for photography equipment.

My home insurance covers 4000 of the camera (obviously not enough) but they told me if it's not for business i could appeal to them with some pictures of my equipment or bring it by so they can see and they might (with additional fee) figure out how to cover it under home instead of business. I'm in canada, so my coverages are going to be different then what you'll have i suspect. but the same idea when it comes down to it, just make sure you company knows what you have so it's not a surprise. |

Just let your agent know the items and values. They should just put a rider on your policy and make sure you get replacement value as this junk goes up 10% a year.( at least w/ Canon glass.)

I have separate insurance for my camera gear....it's crap gear compared to most hobbyist but none the less it's expensive to replace. But the coverage is for repair or replace if unrepairable. I'm paying $30 a year which is cheap, specially when it's tacked to my monthly home and auto insurance.

I added a rider to my renter's insurance with Travelers. It's really two riders, because one lens is over $6100, requiring its own policy. My other cameras and lenses are listed, but covered for replacement up to an aggregate amount. It's around $160 annually for $14,000 in total coverage for losses worldwide. It allows modest "paid" usage of the equipment, but I must affirm that I'm not a "professional" photographer.

I plan to check with home insurance agent if I can add my gear to the scheduled property coverage I intend buying for my other valuables.
