Wondering the same thing, but too lazy to search for answer myself. Guess I'm going to have to now.

335is, is the only current 3 series that still uses the N54 engine, as opposed to the N55. It includes extra cooling with an additional radiator.

power has been bumped to 320hp and 330 lb-ft torque (370 lb-ft torque overboost). its the only non-m 3 series to offer the duel clutch transmission.

visually it comes standard with msport body kit, no fog lights, sports exhaust, msport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, and black kidney grills/side mirrors. not to mention a plethora of 335is badges inside and out.

Basically the 335is is a 335i with all the BMW performance stuff pre-installed on it.

The car would be a gimick if not for two things. #1 it comes with a dual clutch transmission which makes it the only 335i to come with one in America, and that makes it faster than a regular 3 series. #2 it comes with the older N54 engine which you can't get in the current 3 series and can be tuned to have much higher power than the newer cheaper to produce N55.

Simply put the 335is is the only way to get an N54 dual clutch 3 series, which with a $400 tune is the fastest 3 series you can possibly buy.

I used to think the 335is was a really bad deal designed to rip people off who wanted an N54 dual clutch in the US but had to pay out the nose to get it, but I quickly changed my mind and realized that the 335is dual clutch was a $450 option, for a part that costs BMW $3000 more to put on the car.

So overall it's a bargain in dual clutch form because you're getting upgraded wheels, sports seats, all the BMW performance stuff etc for $4000. Seeing as the whole point of the car is the dual clutch which is built into the MSRP, buying it with a manual would be foolish.

Also the overboost function is a bit of a gimick. With minor mods it can make 460 hp and 470 tq all day long. I'm pretty sure BMW limits how long you can overboost the car just so in stock form it doesn't threaten the M3.

335is:

N54 engine
DCT Transmission option
upgraded wheels
tuned exhaust system
blacked out mirrors
blacked out grills
interior and exterior badging
aluminum pedals
320hp
comes with m-sport kit stock
overboost function
foglight delete(except on e93)
additional cooling in engine
bigger engine mounts

not sure if there is anything else im missing. i certainly wouldnt consider it a gimmick considering how much $$$ is costs not only in parts to get a 335i up to those specs but also labor

Everyone always forgets the short throw shifter (in 6MT form), which is awesome.
