New here - looking to purchase 2008 335xi - what to look for?
I just signed up to this site after lurking around a bit and doing some research on the fuel pump issues and such, and would like to ask some questions about a possible 335 purchase.
I currently own a 2007 Mazdaspeed 3, and have been looking to upgrade to a BMW recently. I've been a big time BMW fan for years, and I've always wanted an e46 m3, but when I was pre-approved for my loan, all of the m3's I found were too old or too expensive to fall into the price range I needed. My next step was finding a different model that compares, and that is when I found the 335i. So I've been doing a lot of searching, and I finally found one close to home. I actually visited my sister in Charlotte, NC this past weekend, and one of their good friend's have a 2007 335i auto. He took me to look the car over, and then let me drive the car, and I absolutely fell in love. From there, I decided I definitely wanted to move forward with this so I contacted the place with the 335xi I found last week. Here is the specs: -$24,995 -2008 BMW 335xi -manual -51,9xx miles -grey -ComfortAccess, Sport, Premium and Cold Weather Package. -1 owner previously leased vehicle link to carfax: http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory...&partner=COO_0 I am currently having my insurance agent run the numbers to see how much (if at all) that my insurance premium would increase, and I am waiting to hear back from the dealership. I did not see any recalls performed on the carfax, so it looks like the fuel pump/injectors have not failed (yet). Should I be worried that this work has not been done before, or is this a good sign that the car has made it this far with no warranty/recall work completed? The car is a little over 3 hours from me, so I can't just drive out and look the car over and come back home. I will have to make an appointment and a road trip Saturday morning to do so, but before I go through all this hassle, can you guys let me know if this is a good deal or not, or if I should be concerned? I am assuming that the first thing I should do if I do purchase it is bring it to the local BMW and have them check everything and to check if the recall needs to be done? Our local BMW is literally 5 miles from my home, so this would be feasible. Lastly, is $24,995 a good deal, or do you think I could hassle them some more and get the price a little lower. And no, it does not look like this one is a CPO. But at the same time, all the CPOs I have found near me have been expensive, and out of my range for what I have been pre-approved for. I am into modifying any vehicle I get, so the warranty would likely be shot anyways. Any information would be great, and greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

1 don't buy a car you can't pay for in cash... It's a good deal but has to many miles, that's the reason it's cheaper than most other 335i's it's out of warranty...

I owe around $9,500 on my car and the book is anywhere from 14 to 18k. So you guys think that I should offer $23k and whatever it is on my trade? Can anyone chime in on the fuel pump issue and my question about the carfax? |

Did you check the service history at the BMW dealer ? Since you are not the owner, they may not want to give you the report. Maybe they can tell you what's in the system. All you need is the VIN and you can visit any dealer. It's worth to try.

^^^ thank you for the helpful post. I already called them and asked them if they know if the fuel pump has been serviced under the recall. He said he was unsure, but if I was interested in buying, that he would have this done before I came to look at the car.
Is there anything else I should be looking for, or listening for? Like is there any certain signs of wear or sounds I should be on the lookout for? |

I would pull the history on the car and go from there. The fuel pump is not that big of an issue, they have 10 year 100k miles on the recalled pump. The pump in my car went out like 3 times for the original owner, car went in for the recall and pump change and have had no issues whatsoever. Its been about 10k on it, I've been tuned for the past 5k as well. Noticed the car was a stick, I have a 6MT as well. You should drive the car and listen to the engagement. Some of the cars have noisy bearings. Every now and then I have noticed mine occasionally making noise and I think its a TO bearing. I have been in some cars that were very noisy. Also, check the movement of the shifter, some cars feel very clunky.. not sure if its just fluids that need to be changed or whatnot, but some don't feel as smooth as others.

^^^ very informative post. Once I hear back on my trade appraisal, I will then have him run the history report to see if the pump has been done, or if any other services have been done. Thanks for the help thus far, keep the replies coming if you think of anything else I should be on the lookout for.

any other info? I should be receiving my ballpark trade appraisal in the next few hours, and that will determine if I do the deal or not. I have to fax the purchase order to my Member One rep after receiving it. If all goes well, i will be picking the car up (barring some type of issue with the car).

ok got a bit of an update. I took the advice given to me, and I am having the dealer to contact BMW and run the VIN number to see if any major service and/or recalls have been done to the vehicle.
Also, I got a bit of good news from my rep. She told me that if I can get 1k more on my trade than they offered sight unseen, and if I can get 1k off the BMW, then we have a deal. I got 5.04% apr, so I am happy with that. But on top of that, they will be having an extended 4 year 100k mile warranty included in with my monthly installment. So when I go drive the car and everything, and then try to complete the deal, I will deny their 3 month/3k mile warranty, and try to get 1k off the price. It clearly states on their website that the 3 month/3k mile warranty is included at the listed price. The loan proposal is being sent to the loan officer as I type this, and I should be hearing the final decision soon. Thoughts? Advice? Suggestions? |

Hate to say this, but after your trade and if you still can't pay cash for this, I would pass.........and that's alot of miles for an 2008. My 2006 E90 that I traded is 60% of this and I was reluctant to get any 2008 that is > 30k miles on them.

this is the best deal I can find anywhere near here. Everything else is auto with close to same mileage, or a long ass drive away.
I don't see how you guys expect me to pay cash for a 2008 BMW, or any car for that matter. I don't have an option to buy any vehicle for cash, not even a Yugo, much less a BMW. Financing is my only option. In order to get the loan I need to keep the payments in my range, the vehicle has to be a 2008 or newer, so like I said, this is the best I can find without flying across the country. I've got to trade, so that is not an option. |

I have been shopping around for some time on a 335I 2007 or 2008 and found some great deals with 30K to 35K miles on them. Price points between $23K and $25K. I am currently working on a deal in Orlando, FL on 335I 35K miles for $24K manual. I suggest keep looking and find something with LOW MILES is where its at. CARMAX here FL also had good deals, check them out. GOOD LUCK!

Don't listen to these guys telling you to pay cash for a car. Even extremely rich multi-billionaires finance or lease their cars. Why? Because you can do so much more with the lump sum cash in investments rather than put it all towards a depreciating asset like a car. You can easily make more money in investments than the interest you're paying while financing or leasing. Now, paying cash for a house is another story, wonder how many people here telling you to pay cash for your car have paid cash for their house?

alright guys, got approved, check has been written, and I pick it up tomorrow night. I will be leaving here Saturday morning at 6 am to head down there to hopefully bring this car home. They offered sight unseen on my vehicle 13k, but the average trade is between 13k-16k, so I am going to try to get $14,600 to $15,000 out of my car, and get them to come off $1k on their car, so $2,600 in negotiating to do. Gotta put on my hard hat and go to work.
I have a feeling driving there with the money in hand ready to go, that they will be ready to deal. BTW, I have about 4-5 grand in positive equity in my current trade, so it is like I am paying a good sized downpayment, and I will be coming out with some solid equity in this BMW as well. I will keep everyone posted. I hope and pray this works out, I want this car bad!! |
