Cleaning vanos solenoids?
Hey so my car has been throwing 2A98 - p0016 Crankshaft-inlet camshaft, correlation - Value outside reference range and I think one of my vanos solenoids is sticking.
How would I go about cleaning one of these? Should I just replace it? I'm under CPO but I would like to avoid going to the dealer if possible. Btw through searching I found that this is pretty common....more threads on the N54 though. All were related by reduced power and more faults. My car runs fine but I do get an occasional shudder after start up. Happens within the first 30 seconds and goes away. I also skimmed through a thread and picked up that there maybe a TSB for this? Anyone know about this? Is it just for the N54? |

Not telling you what to do but...my friend is a tech at a local BMW dealer, my 06 325 was throwing those vanos codes, all they did was take out the unit and soak it in brake fluid for the day.

Thanks. Can anyone confirm this? Soaking in brake fluid? daveg520 would you mind double checking with your friend?
I'm thinking about blowing some compressed air through it. |

I have no power reduction what so ever. I'm not 100% sure if this is tripping my SES light.....I have another code I know is tripping my SES light. But regardless, these codes don't really point to a faulty solenoid....that would be 2A82 (intake) and 2A87 (exhaust). Both suggest a mechanically stuck/jambed solenoid. I beleive 2A98 suggests a dirty/sticking one. I'm gonna try the compressed air. And if that doesn't work I'll let the dealer figure it out :/ Thanks for your input though. |

Have you tried swapping the intake/exhaust solenoids to see if it follows? I plan on doing this and if it does follow, I'm going to try cleaning it with compressed air. If that doesn't solve, off to the dealer it is. :/ |

I reset all my adaptations recently. I wonder if that is what set it off. Also a few more questions. Did you notice any difference after you seafoamed the car? Did you do it yourself? If so, what method did you use? Gas, oil, throttle body? Did you suck any into the engine? If so, what tube or inlet did you use? Sorry about all the questions lol. I'm thinking about doing it too. I'm at 63k. |

Thing is...It hasn't come back since I went to the dealer before x-mas, so who knows ?
Far as Seafoam goes I bought two cans, one can for the gas tank, well since n52 are blessed with Valvetronic theirs no traditional vacuum on the intake manifold since the throttle body is always open. But anyways I couldn't find anywhere to tap into for the seafoam so I put some into the oil (about 10oz) did about 50 miles and did an oil change. I cant say it did anything but the fault hasn't come back since sooo...plus its only like 10 bucks and an hour worth of work. Let me know if you find some type of vacuum inlet |

i have had huge problems with the vanos outlet on my previous 335. the dealer cleaned it once and it kept popping up with codes on my BT tool and going into limp mode when i drive hard, then they cleaned it again and same thing, went to another dealer and they exchanged it and it worked with no probs. i would def clean it as i hear its not hard ( dont know how) and if it keeps going into limp mode after cleaning the first time, just get them replaced as its covered under cpo. i did have my car tuned, so that might have been the culprit.

Replacing them is not that hard and the solenoid is around $100.
