Wink turbo failure?!

I ve heard so many negative comments on the 335i and hpfp failures and I was wondering how reliable these cars would be in the long run w/o warranty.

I understand a lot of these negative comments on the 335i pop up because people mainly get on to complain, but that would be great to know ahead of time if this car is a keeper or not.

Im talking 100,000 miles down the road. I mean extended warranty wont cover this car forever.

So what are the chances of the turbos or hpfp going out around 100,000 miles. Im assuming that would be very costly out of pocket? Do turbos go out often?

It's a turbo charged car, yes they will go out eventually. You pay the price of having a forced induction car as there are more moving parts, more heat, and more chances of things going wrong. The turbos spin at rediculously high rpm and get extremely hot, any car or truck with a turbo will have one fail eventually. Most common turbo problems are wastegate rattle and leaking bearings.

You are looking at $700 x 2 for the turbos, $150 for misc parts, and roughly 8-13 hours of labor ($100ish an hour) so thats about $3000 out of pocket.

Garage List
2008 BMW 335i  [10.00]
let's just say i'm not buying another forced induction car for a while.
so far its been good to me, but i know the turbos will fail within the 12-15 years i plan on keeping this car, i know that sounds crazy on this board, but i've got a friend with a civic that has 240k miles on it, and it runs pretty well.
i got the car when i was 16, and plan to keep it till i'm 28 or so.
repairing my old bmw cant cost more than buying a new one ...or can it?

all the problems are well documented, and for my 8 years of college it won't be driven much except back home a couple times each month

if you are just keeping until 100,000 then dont worry about it. Warranty covers the hpfp til 120,000 miles but not sure how many miles on the turbo.

I have seen lots of people get them replace prior to hitting 50k, but they were all tuned and running x2 the boost. I'm at 56k and I'm replacing mine because the front turbo is leaking oil from the bearings (can smoke pretty bad sometimes). I'm bought upgraded turbos from Rob Beck and it's costing me roughly $4500 installed.

Unless you have an extended warranty past the 50K, it will be out of your wallet.

I had mine replaced by BMWNA due to wastegate rattle which was fixed once with replacing the actuators in November, but came back in Feb with a vengeance... so at 48k mi I have 2 brand new turbos and the 07 vs 08+ are different model turbos, there is no wastegate rattle on the new revisions) total price through dealer 3000x2 + 2000 labor = $8000 (they practically have to drop the engine to install them)

I am absolutely selling this car soon after my CPO ends Jan 2013..

Wow if that wasn't under warranty I'd tell them to keep the car! They rape you with fees! You can buy brand new turbos from Tischer at $700 each (200% dealer mark up is fraud and abuse!)

https://www.trademotion.com/partloca...layCatalogid=0

The labor fee is about right, takes about 13 hours of labor.

According to Tischer's website, the turbos are identical from 07-10 see my post above with the hyperlink

he said their is no waste gate rattle on the new turbos. isnt it something like the software changed and not the turbos themselves and made the turbos not get that wastegate rattle?
