Limp mode today
On my way home from work today and my 08 335xi goes into limp mode. I was cruising in 4th at 2400 rpm when it kicked in. Pulled over stopped the engine and restarted. Problem gone. No slow cranks.
Something to be concerned about? |

get the code pulled, might be all sorts of things. VANOS solenoids, vacuum lines, the fuel pump (of course), injectors...the list goes on and on

You've fallen victim to the HPFP.

I think it is the slow beginning of HPFP problems... take it to the dealer asap and dont wait until it gets worse. one limp mode is enough.

Definitely, it's not a fluke. My car did that and nothing happened for 3 more weeks. Ignored it again. Happened again. Went to dealership, didn't do anything. Happened again, I insisted they do something. They replaced IBS sensor. Happened again. Gave me car back didn't do anything. Happened again, drove to dealer, PUMA case, without my car for almost 2 weeks. It was wishful thinking on my part that the problem would simply go away.

Reporting back. Its been a month since the limp mode incident. Still no issues. I guess I'll play it by ear and see what happens. The car has been operating normally since the incident.

Car went into limp mode again yesterday. I haven't checked the codes, don't know how cause I'm a dummy. Do I need a OBD reader?
So I was driving home yesterday doing 30mph on a local road and the car went into limp. Not sure if it matters but I just refueled the car. I always use Mobil Premium but this time I filled with Shell V-Power. I think that it was just a coincidence. So I called my BMW service shop today and they want me to bring it in on Monday. So the car was perfectly fine for the first 15k miles and then I go in for the recall in Feb and get two limp modes since. Hmm. |

I want an M3, curse BMW for haunting our N54/55 owners with paranoia of such an excruciating error happening to their vehicle.

I used to get Limp Mode when pushing the car hard before it had warmed up to 240 F. Had the ECU and HPFP replaced about 5 months ago. Stopped having limp modes.
I did a 3500 mile road trip about 6 weeks ago through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. I filled up with gas outside Park City, Utah and got a limp mode as I drove at about 7,000 feet. Pulled over, let the car rest, and started up again with no issues. I had been running a JB 3 at map 5, so I reset it at map 0. Now problems for the next week or so, but on my way home from Yellowstone Park I had 2 limp modes, and after the second one my service engine soon light came on. I had just filled the car up in Idaho. I called my SA back home and he told me the light most likely came on as a result of codes being thrown due to the limp mode. Told me to bring the car in once I got back. The next day I left Utah, and the light was not on. Drove home with no further issues, and she seemed to be running fine. I didn't bring the car right in, but I did connect a Bravarian Technic cable up to see what fault codes were in the system. All of the fault codes that showed up were "no longer present" according to the computer read out. I spoke to my SA about this a few days later and had him check the readouts. He said that a combination of poor gas with 10% ethanol and the alltitude most likely tripped the limp modes. No work has been done since my return and the car runs fine. |
