2007 (was 2008) 335i issues

All,

I bought a 2006 325I a few weeks ago for my daughter and really like the car so far. I have been able to drive it a fair amount and love the way it drives.

I am considering buying a 2007 335i I found that is pretty nice. My question is this... is there ant reason I might want to stay away from one of these? Have they had any issues that seem to plauge this model? I read something about the fuel pump... has that been resolved or was it for a different model?

I also test drove a 535i yesterday... it was nice but I couldnt see the huge price difference in the cars. About 6 or 7 grand more for the 5 series seems like too much.

Thoughts?

Greg

If you like the 325 you gonna love the 335, it comes with 300 HP and 300 FTQ plus is twin turbo, the Fuel pump came defective on some vehicles but BMW issue a recall on the pump and they are replacing it with a better and improved (HPFP). I own an 05 325I and love the car but when I test droved the 335I I went nuts and bought a 2007 335I Coupe. You will not regret buying a 335I but make sure is the N54 engine and not the N55, the N55 is single turbo.

BMW are well engineered cars. If you are a DIY kind of guy, these cars are not that difficult to work on with the help of these forums. Otherwise maintenance can become expensive.

The 335 is very dependable! The fuel pump will have probably been changed to the more recent design, however bmw warranties the fuel pump 10 years 120K miles....no biggie to change it yourself after the extended warranty.

You will love the 335 and then you will love it more when you get a tune for it and then watch out.....!!!

2007 335i

Opps... it is a 2007 instead of a 2008... does that change anything about this car?

OP,

Do a lot of research. Read many posts. There are many 335i fanboys who are not objective and many of them are leased which is a different perspective.

They are great cars. 335i are faster but the first entry to the Turbo market is not up to BMW standard historically.

Price was not an issue for me when looking for a car but finding the right car.

Many have had had good experience with their 335i's.

Some have been a nightmare.

When I took in all the information I concluded that the sport, or non sport is your first choice to determine the driivng dynamic you prefer. I suppose you know Step vs. manual.

Im a 50 year old man. I have had my share of high performance cars in V-8 motors and a porsche 911 that was so quick it was scarey. Have owned every german brand 2-3 times and have some good experience.

If you never had a really really fast car and don't mind the possible repairs on the fuel pumps (warranted to 125k miles and turbo related issues then this is a nice choice. Everyone needs to get it out of their system.

I was only going with a manual Transmission and the 328i is is no slow car and very satisfying to me in the sport configuration. Its not crazy fast like the 335i but on the streets its more power than I need/want/desire. Im not wanting for more power. IN the steptronic I would say the 328 can be a bit pedestrian. Steptronic is the 335i was much better but I did not feel connected. This might sound weird but I'll explain. IN manual the Driver is driving "fast". IN an autimatic the Car is going fast and Im driving it. Yeah, of course thats how it is, but its the connection.

There are no bad choices here unless you end up with a bad car in either displacement.

But if your worried about the motor and its problems then keep doing your homework.

I was and opted away. Im very happy with my 328i and never had a regret not getting a 335i.

A 2007 has potential problems with various engine auxiliary components as it was the first year. I wouldn't (and didn't) buy one without an extended warranty. By 2009, the majority of engine issues were resolved and I wouldn't have any issue owning outside of the original OEM warranty.

I highly suggest peaking around the ECU to see if there is evidence of tuning. Then check the the clip to on the TMAP sensor near the throttle body for evidence of 2 other more mild tunes, that clip is easily broken when installing a tune there.

It's a fairly reliable car, well worth the trouble it can have IMO.

I just went and drove this car at lunch... It looks almost new with 28,000 miles on it. I heard people say these cars were quick but I didnt expect it to be that much quicker than my 325i... I was wrong... good grief these are fast...

I know I am getting old and things may seem to be moving faster lately but that thing was crazy quick... I drove a 535 saturday that was no where near as fast.

Anyway... thanks for the info...

I came out of an E90, and $7k diff for an E60 535i is well worth it for the same condition/mileage/options compare to a 335i. But then, it comes down to your own preferences. I just love how the E60 feels/handles etc, so much more than my E90. I think I am getting old and no longer enjoy all the goodies that comes with the E90 (150lbs lighter, the wind noise, engine revving sound, loud bang when going over bumps, car shakes when strong wind blows). Both are great cars. I would go for an E92 if you don't need 4doors.

OK... I guess it all depends on where or what you are coming from...
I currently own a 2008 FJ Crusier, 1976 Ford Bronco, 2002 Mazda MX5, 2011 F150 Platinum which I just traded a 2008 Tacoma for. Just bought my daughter a 2006 325i.

All of them have so much more engine / road / wind noise compared to the BMW that driving it seems super smooth and quiet. The F150 may be a little quieter than the BMW but nowhere near as much fun to drive. I am 47 years old so I know what you are talking about on the comfort issues. However when I drive the 535i it just didnt have the same sporty feel of the 335i. Maybe that gets old after a while and the smoother ride is preffered.

I still have not convienced myself I want one of these turbo cars outside of warranty and I dont want to pay the 2300 bucks for the extended warranty.

Need to sell the Miata first anyway... any buyers out there?

I moved to a house in town and my lease for the 2007 530 was up and I had no room for the Porsche. I knew I would miss the Targa and "Sport" end of the drive. My 530 was a manual as well.

To me, the 328i coupe was the right compromise to replace both the cars.

I despise the notion of an extended warranty cost for only two years of coverage. For me it was more a time thing as Im am not putting 50k miles in two yeras.

BTW, I think Miata's are great! Low running costs and true sport car flavor without the hassles. Not the fastest thing on the road but the quickness is there. I think traditionally this is the BMW trait but as the cars got heavier they lose some of it. The 335i does fill the need for "got a hemi" crowd. Remember its been a few years since this car was designed for this market.

The Coupe in sports to me sits you lowe to the ground which gives you the road hugg feel and the suspension set up very nice.

The 530i is and was a great car! I great highway cruiser and very comfy. Had the comfort seats and they were amazing!!! Hugged like a sport seat but articulated in the middle of the back for super adjustment.

I don't care nor desire more amenities than the premium package and don't want NAV. I have leather, SAT, Ipod control and bluetooth for the phone.

Thats me.....

Very happy camper. But those new E 350 coupes are really a super looking car! Maybe in a few years the bug will hit me again!

Hi My comments are as follows;

Read my posts and the threads also;

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=525415

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=514771

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=524889

After reading all that , Ill summarize three main points;

1) 335s are wonderfull cars but do need care and maintainence, sometimes the fixes can be more costly than worth.
2) If you do for the car, you will enjoy it and probably never look back. I personally can never go to a smaller engine size, or less than 306hp, the handling and smoothness makes it much more like 400hp feel. It also does 0-60 in 4 secs flat (E93) without mods (I have the old bigger biturbo...dont know if that makes a difference) the coupe (E92) is 3.9 (0-60) so all in all great car.
3) If you do get that car, ask the dealer for a full vehicle Inspection, service and maintainence log. You will get a list of all the work done on it from start to finish, and the infamous HPFP failure may have been fixed. If it has been fixed, you need to watch it, if if hasnt been fixed, you make be lucky and wont experience it for a long time.

5 Series if you want an executive cruiser. Coupe/Cabrio if you want a sporty drive.

Good Luck and hope all my comments and reviews have helped.
