The Black Box

Hi,

I am wondering if our cars have a "Black Box".

The reason I am asking is that last night I was watching the news and they was covering a car chase, and of course it ended in the death of two people, the driver and passenger.

So the police stated that they did not know how fast they was going but they would have to recover the black box from the car (2006 Honda civic, there was nothing left that was recognizable)

So do our cars have a black box? and where is it? can we access it?

Let me know what you know or think.

I prefer white box

Not sure if ours do. If so they are said to only record a handfull of seconds and constantly loop until you crash. At that point they'll have X amount of second before the crash recorded whether your braking, gassing, etc.

Its probably somewhere that is not easily if at all accessable and the data it would have would not be useful. Like poster above said will only contain previous 5-20 seconds of driving.

Anything that has any kind of remote assistance does, because these details are provided to the local dispatch in an emergency.

Not necessarily. I believe all the dispatchers are provided with are the fact that the air bags deployed, which in turn caused it to call for help.

The ECU data logs certain events, last 30 seconds, rpm,mph etc
This is not BMW specific. All fuel injected vehicles have this info stored for diagnostics. Insurance companies and law enforcement are also using this data in certain instances.
