What is everyone paying for tax/tag renewal?
I just got a letter from the gov't asking for $250 in tax and $75 for tag issue fee. This seems extremely high. I don't recall ever paying this much. The assessed value is $23,200 which is more than I paid for it last August. I feel like a California resident with this ridiculous tax.

You guys have it easy. Property tax alone on my plates is over $950. Here in Nebraska you don't pay sales tax at the dealer so the first year for cars over $40k for plates are $3200+.

You pay that per year to register? That's what we are talking about. Don't get me started on how much taxes I pay in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.

That us what we pay a year and it goes down on average $200-$300 a year. Nebraska loves their taxes. House property tax is extremely high too.

That's outrageous, I thought the standard of living would be a lot less in the mid-west.

You guys need to try Oklahoma. I just renewed my tag for $84.
We only pay an excise tax of 3.25% at the time of purchase. No personal property tax. Tags are never more than $91. Tag is the only thing we have to pay on an annual basis. |

well i'm sure (and maybe i'll eat my words here - and should just do a simple google search but don't want to cheat) that their sales tax isn't 9.25% like it is here (or higher in other parts of CA).

$879.82 to register my 2011 here in Colorado. That was after saving about $200 as I paid for a year on my previous car and traded after ~ 6 months. Of course my property taxes are only about $2,000 a year, so I think I am still ahead.

Oh wow, I didn't realize people were having to pay so much... I bought mine overseas with no sales tax and reg is 30 bucks a year. I do recall Virginia trying to charge luxury tax every year when I was stationed there, but because I wasn't a permanent resident I didn't have to pay it... I though that was just in Monopoly!! lol (jk)

Here in MD, I paid 6% sales tax on the cost of my 128i, less the value of my trade-in. The registration and emissions inspection comes to $142 every two years. Tom |

in oregon it is $87 every 2 years.. if you have a special plate (not vanity) then you pay $30-$50 on top of the 87, if you have a vanity and the regular plate it is $87 + $125(vanity fee), if you have a vanity special plate then it is $87 + $30-$50 + $125... and if you live in Portland you pay an extra $40 a year for the Sellwood bridge falling down and needing to be replaced
I have a regular vanity and pay about $220 every 2 years.. PS. I hear in Michigan they charge per cylinder?? |

As a junior attorney, the OP should know what his state laws are regarding taxation. He should also know how his state values cars for taxation.
Quite simply, it doesn't really matter. Those states with low (or no) personal property tax get you with higher income/property taxes and those states with low income tax sock it to you with higher personal property taxes. A few years ago, MD had a lower sales tax for cars. They then decided to only charge tax on the difference between the trade and the new car price. At the same time, the sales tax on cars was raised to 6%. VA has an annual personal property tax on cars but the state income tax rate is much lower. With two cars and a house valued equal to my current house, we'd save about $15k a year moving from MD to VA - after we paid the annual personal property tax. |
