Broken wiper stalk
Hi all,
Wiper stalk is broken on my F10 Only the plastic casing is broken. Wiring, harness, functions are all intact. Checked and everything works. I am in India and the stalk replacement estimate is close to $1000. I am thinking of just using a strong plastic adhesive to fix the broken plastic. To do a thorough job, I will have to open the steering column. Can the steering column be opened without having to open the steering wheel, airbag assembly, etc.? Thanks folks! |

Long story. Sort of funny, in a tragic way. In short, there were a disgruntled person who tried to assault the occupants and asked the driver (employee) for the keys to prevent him from driving off. The driver insisted this is 'key-less' and this dumbo pulled on the wiper stalk hard thinking that is the key. So there :-)

That's a great story! Carjacker mistakes turn signal stalk for key.
Sorry to hear about your troubles tho. Quote:

Most likely, you will need to take the steering wheel off in order to get the trim cover removed to glue this part. You might be better off just trying to glue it as it is now, being careful not to get too much in there since you still have to move the stalk up and down and don't want to hamper that action.
According to RealOEM, the stalk is part of a whole module that fits around the steering wheel and includes the stalk on the other side. No wonder it is $1,000. Just a suggestion.........I would first go the route of using superglue that is formulated for plastic. (They make it for plastic models and a local hobby shop should have it.) Use it sparingly, and only on the broken surface of the stalk that needs to be "nitted" back to the column assembly. If that does not work then go on the epoxy (same as above, they make formulation for plastic) Last edited by ghueser; 05-13-2011 at 07:52 AM.. |

My service manager promised to get back to me in a couple of days on the insurance coverage - understandably, it is a peculiar case and he needs some time.
Thanks ghueser for the part photo - at least now I know that the dealer is not talking BS when he says it is a $1000 job! I tried one sort of superglue that is locally available (called fevikwik) that I have used successfully to fix all kinda broken plastic parts but it did not work on this wiper stalk. It is made of different type of plastic I guess - the texture of the wiper stalk cross-section is very grainy unlike the smooth texture you see in most plastic broken pieces. Will try the epoxy adhesive before going the $1000 route! |

A Red Green (you had to see the show) solution is duct tape.
