Well I think smoke coming from anything is a sign something is wrong.....I would probably not drive the car and have it checked out.
What model is it? What color is the smoke? |

^ 328s don't have turbos, unless he has a custom kit which I doubt. Is the car running properly, any codes, service engine lights? Was your hood up when you saw the smoke? If not I suggest you pop the hood open and try to pinpoint where the smoke is coming from. Good luck

Yeah I would not be driving that. Call your BMW dealer or tow truck company and have them come pick it up if its thick smoke. If it's light, wait for the engine to cool, check the radiator, and drive slowly to your dealer. If you're on the roads and the smoke gets noticeably thicker/the engine starts to tremor, just stop.

White is usually coolant and comes out the exhaust. These motors have a tendency to have bad valve cover gaskets, although 28k is a bit soon. That's my bet tho.

Why dont you open your hood and check around the filler cap and the oil filter for a leak. If you see one then yes the shop was probably the culprit. Most likley your valve cover gasket is leaking onto the header, as the header heats up the oil burns off. Pop your hood start the car and look for the smoke Do a search I thought there was a tsb/recall about this |

Smoking under hood.
Dirtdriver..
I had the same issue on my 07 e90. Like others have said, it is most likely the valve cover gasket. I noticed a weird "adhesivey" burning smell about 2 weeks before a huge plume of white smoke came billowing out of the engine bay. It was a leaking valve cover. The oil leaks out of the gasket on the passenger side and drips down onto the exhaust pipes, creating the smoke. If you pop the hood, look down on the passengers side at the crease where the valve cover meets the head. Then look and see if there is oil leaking from that seam down onto the exhaust pipes. Yes this is covered under the BMW warranty. I had mine replaced TWICE within 4 months. I have no idea why it wasn't "fixed" the first time, but it was annoying to have to take it in for the same issue after only 4 months. Anyhow, hope that helps. |

I'd bet it is just water vapor. It looks like it is raining in the pic posted. Water falling onto the hot radiator, or exhaust = white smoke.
Does the smoke smell sweet or a burning smell? If it doesn't smell like either of those then it is probably just water vapor. |
