Went out of warranty 2 months ago - power steering goes out
So my 07 E92 started sounding like a diesel engine under the hood... Quite alarmed I took it in.
It went out of warranty last April and I decided not to spend the $3,000 for the extended warranty deal. Dealer called and said my power steering is done, and there is another problem that they think is an air leak in the intake. He said the power steering would be $1,467 and guessed the other problem would be about $300. Looks like I have already used 2 out of my 3 strikes on my warranty decision... Doesn't look good. Anyone else been in this situation? Anyone know when the new Audi A5 is coming out? hah I'll be honest - I have had some problems with this car. I feel like I have had to take it into the dealership quite a bit. On two different occasions a pump went out relating to the turbos and the car went into Limp mode. I am sure that wouldn't have been cheap had it not been under warranty.

Are you the original owner? I get the extended warranty, 4 mos. early because this dude discounted it and no sales tax, and I thought I had to do it by 45 mos but they changed the policy. Now, the car is flawless for over a year, and I've been wondering if it's gonna be like the $390 down the drain for the 5 yr. tire protection which i've never used....we should change places!

Ugh, I was told the warranty was going to be another $4500, but I have about a week before I hit 50k miles. Now I'm starting to rethink it.

changed power steering pump in warranty
I changed my power steering pump at about 70000 km (45k miles).
I drive a 2007 BMW328xi. There was a "beeping noise" at the end of stroke when I fully steer. They checked at the dealership and changed the pump under warranty. I was lucky I claimed that. They also changed the exhaust lifter for the ticking noise and the front struts for non-efficient suspension. I thought about extended maintenance/warranty package too. |

Now if that $4,500 included extended maintenance as well... now we're talking. As for whether to purchase or not... definitely just personality type and financial situation if you ask me. i'm more conservative and risk averse... it's worth $3K to me for the next 3 years to feel confident taking the car on road trips, not to mention it'll be easier for me to sell the vehicle in 2.5 years. Whether or not I actually break even on that isn't a huge concern to me. I'll much less regret having "wasted" a few grand on a warranty than if something serious breaks (considering i'm the 2nd owner) and costs me $5K+ to fix. |

I took the gamble and didn't buy one. So far so good, only thing in a year and half has been a $35 actuator. My car has no turbos, however. I bought an extended factory warrranty on my F150 (b/c it was only $900!) and only had to use it once (for a $500 AC fix). Fingers crossed that BMWs are being built better than Fords.

If you have the non-active steering pump, the pump is only a couple hundred dollars. If you're inclined to working on cars, you should definitely do it yourself. It isn't difficult, I replaced mine a couple months ago. I think i spent about a good 3 hours of my evening to remove the old one and reinstall the new one. Its a fairly easy/straightforward job. Give it a try, you'll be very satisfied and happy you did.

Why not change the pump yourself. Super easy to do and would save you a ton. For that matter find a good independent shop and you will save a ton.

The 335 is the only extended warranty I have ever purchased, so it was disappointing to me to do it. The entire BMW culture assumes it's just part of operating the car. Two of my cousins told me, $3495 list for a 7/100 gold? You can get them down on that price, and you should seriously consider getting it. I was like huh? They're both intelligent people, and they're telling me to throw away $2800 on a 7/100 extended warranty? At the time it was a year ago so you really couldn't quite see any of the 335's out of warranty yet, had to rely on what 330 owners were saying. I'm sure as the next year goes by we'll see a lot more "I'm out 2 grand for some POS component and I don't have an extended warranty" posts. Believe me, I feel for them. Either way, if BMW built the cars for reliability, we'd all save some $$$....

I'm debating on the extended warranty as well. But I've got mods galore so I'm definately wondering if I should even do it. I worry more about electrical shit. But like they say..you can always do it yourself or find a different shop for cheaper.

I know how it feels for a 335 to die on the highway under a full warranty. I cannot even imagine the feeling if that happened out-of-warranty. It would be a dealership's paradise--all the troubleshooting that they supposedly do, that leads nowhere, ON THE CLOCK and the customer's dime. |

I also don't have a warranty. I am the 2nd owner and chose to not buy one fro the dealer. I figured that if I buy the warantee, the money's gone. If I don't buy it, then I have a chance to come out ahead. Of course if my car develops a lot of problems, I lose. So far I had to replace the water pump & thermostat, and get the AC recharged.

Yeah, I've had a laundry list of problems... Fuel pump, both wastegates, all 6 injectors, compressor, and two evaporator cores. I almost feel like "Well i'm safe for another 50k since everything that can go wrong, has." On the flip side, any one of those would be a huge deal.
As for the price, I didn't try to haggle because I never do that until I'm ready to make a deal. Does BMW provide loaners if you have the ext. warranty?

For a 335i, I'd get the extended warranty. I own the cheap cousin, the 328i, so I didn't bother with the extended warranty. |
