ALMOST got into a bad accident - BMW FTW
First of all, I just took delivery of my new 335is on June 30 . Trying to get some mods (tint, spacers) done before posting pics.
Anyways, I was commuting to work today, and as I was taking the offramp (its a long offramp so normal speeds are 60-70) some mustang came out of nowhere going no more than 5 mph. I was doing 70 or 80. I don't know if his car malfunctioned, or what caused him to do that, but either way, I slammed the brakes, my car started to slide. With some help from God I kept control of the car and slid past his car without hitting him or the wall. My heart was in my throat for the last hour or so. I respect my car even more now than I did before. I honestly think that in 9 out of 10 cars, this would have been a hopeless crash. Just wanted to share since I know some of you guys can relate. I am SO glad that my new baby didn't get hurt EDIT: My first reaction was that I wanted to kill this guy. I thought of following him or calling the cops or something, but ended up just letting it go. |

Yea one time I was driving on the highway driving behind some cars that were should of been in the right lane. Everyone is driving about 75 80 when all of a sudden a person 2 cars in front of me slams on the brakes. Nothing happens just a little shaken up then a couple minutes later he does the same thing. The car in back of him hits him. I'm about to stop but I realize there's a Lexus suv in back of me honking his horn. So I quickly let off the brakes and go in the hov lane and hear the Lexus crash into the car that was in front of me. Crazy thing was that we were all driving the same distance from each other. Thank God for BMW brakes and maneuverability. I could of stopped without hitting the car from where I was . Walked away without a scratch.

Out of Nowhere?
When a car is in front of you, it does not come out of nowhere. As a driver, you need to anticipate whatever conditions may may exist outside of your immediate line of sight.
For example, one correct usage of "out of nowhere" is when a car is behind you and traveling at an excessive rate of speed and you say "...the car behind me came out of nowhere, traveling at least 40 MPH faster than the ramp limit, hit the wall and got totaled. I hope the driver is alright, because he looked in pretty bad shape. It took them a half-hour to pry him out of that new car. Must of been just getting used to driving it, I guess." See what I mean?

Im sure your traction control system and advanced braking system helped.
One time I went for a BMW test drive in an E60 550i M-Sport, The salesguy said he had to drive off the lot. He then took us to an empty backroad and said I'm gonna do a 0-60, count to 3, and do a 60-0. He stopped, made sure we were all buckled, then floors it. 60, ok, hands up, ready, 60-0. car stopped dead straight on a bumpy road. it was amazing. BMW FTW |

BMW steering is very positive, very responsive and gives a lot of feedback. This can be very confidence inspiring. Just be sure it doesn't inspire you to be overconfident. CA

To me, it sounds like you were speeding on the off ramp and almost rear ended someone in a Mustang who's having car problems...?
I don't see why you're trying to blaim the other driver. There is no way they were driving 5 mph intentionally. If there was an accident, you'd likely be the one held at fault. |

I'm glad noone got hurt, but honestly I don't know how you couldn't have seen a car going 5 mph on a long offramp, unless there were multiple exits on the ramp or something...

I just came back from work, I live in a very hilly and twisty road, that was no one driving there at the time, and I lost account of how much the little nannies in the car intervene and my dash looked like a Christmas Tree.

There is much to be said for having a nimble, capable vehicle to avoid accidents rather than a massive clumsy tank to act as your steel cocoon in the same situation.

It's amazing how I have a near-death experience, go to the only place I feel people will relate to me, share my story, and just get a bunch of flak...
I was no driving crazy at all. This "offramp" is kind of unique, and has multiple exits. The average speed where this happened is 65mph - same as the speed limit. People don't start slowing down until way further ahead. So anyone trying to criticize me or my driving because of this, try to get the facts straight, OK? I am a very defensive driver. As a matter of fact, I am positive that it was largely due to my defensive driving habits and fast reflexes that I survived unscathed. I truly feel that many drivers would have gotten into a very bad accident in this same situation. As for "blaming" the other driver - come on, seriously? You weren't there, you don't know the whole situation, and you are going to try and take this disposition? That's an asshole - if you were in my situation you would feel the same if I tried telling you that I was "trying to blame the other driver". Ridiculous. "Watch your driving, yeah?" - OK, THANKS FOR THE TIP!!! Read above paragraph. |

I am not really clear on where the other driver appeared from?
Was there another entrance to the ramp that allowed him to pull out in front of you? CA

I avoided a head on collision. We had two kids in our vehicle too. A teen girl, texting, came across the double yellow at us. I steered hard, braked hard, palm on the horn, put the vehicle hard off the shoulder, slightly sideways, into the leaves, steered back towards the road to avoid trees, and got back safely stopped on the shoulder with about 1" to spare between her car and ours. I was doing 40, she was doing 40. I was driving an 07 Odyssey. Yes, the modern dynamic safety dynamic control features probably saved our ass, BECAUSE, I was paying close attention.
