'08 335i goes back tomorrow

Well it's been a mostly good 3 years. Except for the HPFP, injector and vanos problems I had, I've enjoyed the car. I'm at the end of my owner's choice "lease", will turn it in tomorrow.
My custom build 2012 Cayman S just came in this morning, will pick it up right after I drop the BMW off.
Much thanks to this forum for all of the help, especially the heads-up on the HPFP problems.

Nice choice. You'll have to post back in a few weeks and let us know how they compare.

I think I'd be really upset if I was forced to return my BMW, but I new Porsche on the way... Win!

Same path I took - I traded in my 2007 335i for a 2009 Cayman S. My 335i was a great car and I did not have a single problem with it save for replacing the rock hard run flats.

Comparison: My 335i had tons of power and torque with my JB3; my Cayman has a Remus exhaust and Evolution Motorsports intake so it is down in power but the PDK makes up for that with its super quick shifts in sport mode. I do think my old 335i would start to pull away after 70-80 mph though. All other aspects such as handling, braking, etc, go to the Cayman S but it is a mid engine 2 seat sports car that weighs much less. Both are great cars in their own right.

Good luck with your new car and I will see you on the Planet 9 forum.

Dave

Sounds good, I post as dabrams over there. I pretty much loaded mine up as it will be my DD, 12k/yr or so. PDK, sport chrono, LSD, PASM, heated and ventilated seats, Nav, Bose, XM, Sport design wheel with paddle shifters, design package (19" black Spyder wheels, black mirrors, side vents, tailpipes, model designation and interior trim). I will be the only Peridot S in the area.

Good luck! I would take handling over speed any day!

Cayman is the natural successor to the now bloated 911! Porsche won't let cayman get faster than the 911, but its overall the better car!

Enjoy!

WHy not the Cayman R?

I can't wait to go back to the states so that I can lease a vehicle I can't afford to buy.

More for people who purchase, Porsche is getting higher marks for reliability. It's uncanny who I know several people at work who drive Porsches, but no turbos.

What's interesting is the base on a Cayman R is like 6k more than a 335is. I suppose it's misleading because if I'm not mistaken xenons are optional, as is leather, etc. The people I know who have a Cayman do not use them daily, you don't really just slap 4 snows on one and go. They treat them more like toys, fair weather cars, kinda like a bike.

Why would you do that, or are you being facetious? When I was a college student I asked my dad why in the world debit cards exist. He said so people can avoid using their credit cards. I said how come, you use someone else's money for almost a month with credit cards. he grinnned and said, young grasshopper, there are people who carry a balance on their cards, and are paying interest. They are even maxed out, so they use debit cards instead which come out of money that they do have. I asked him why would people carry a balance on their credit cards? He just smiled.

R yes, but S is a good daily driver even in winter, and even better with optional LSD.

ps. no bringing up base Cayman.....for me those are true poor-mans-porsches

I think another reason why a Cayman S isn't always a daily driver is it's in the $1 club, i.e. costs more than a dollar a mile to operate it....more like $1.15 to the 335's 93 cents. Kinda makes that 47 cent per mile Accord look better and better in these economic times!

I didn't get an R because I wanted PASM and ventilated seats and added weight in anyway with Nav and Bose. I did get the LSD. I think this will make a better DD than an R. I lease because I like a new car every 3 years, not because I can't afford to buy.

I have actually never leased a vehicle before. I've always bought them outright. I have found that if you buy the vehicle properly you can minimize your operating cost even more than you would leasing a vehicle. I am replacing my vehicle about evert 1.5 years.

The Cayman S was a great decision though, I love the looks of the R but your really not gaining that much performance in ratio to what creature comforts you relinquish.

Did you take a look at the Cayman S Black edition? I saw one in the dealership the other day and I was very impressed with it.

The Black edition is a great deal. It came out right after I ordered my car. I really didn't want a black car anyway, too hard to keep clean, although the $ savings would pay for a bunch of detailing.
