If you don't need the telephoto reach, look at a Canon 10-22mm or a Tokina 11-16mm.

Then it's a matter of doing some research and shopping around a bit. The Tokina is a little less costly, but it also has less range and can be hard to find. Plus some folks report flaring issues. The Canon 10-22mm is less prone to flare. I have one and I love it.
Check out the Lens Sample Photos on POTN. Look for both lenses and see which one you like better. You can also read some good reviews on them at The Digital Picture.

B&H Photo has a used one for $749. B&H gives you a 90 day warranty and a 15 return policy. If they say "email for condition," it usually means the lens is damn near flawless. Maybe a returned new lens. If you're patient, you may find one on Craigslist. I got mine off Craigslist for $550.
And if you're not too far from NYC, you may want to walk into B&H and ask about a used 10-22mm. When I got my used 85mm f1.8 there, they sold it to me for about $20 less than the advertised price.
