Where will you be working? Traffic can be a nightmare over the bridges, but that's true of anywhere up here. Mercer Island is generally a well to do Burb..., upscale neighborhoods and safe but boring. Well situated though between Seattle and the Eastside.

If i do get a job, i'll be working at Boeing Field-King County International Airport, but i have to wait till end of winter early spring till i get an answer.

In the meant time i'm making plans, trying to learn as much as i can about Seattle and its surrounding areas.

My main concern is how quickly road crew cleans up the roads after a snow storm. Having only one road to and from Mercer Island could be a pitta. And if the Island is susceptible to power loss for a long periods of time.

Thanks.

If you're under 30 and/or not loaded, don't live on mercer island. It's boring and pretentious IMO. It is definitely not too bad of a commute on i-90 at this point. That may change soon with lightrail taking up the whole express lane. Snow storms are of no concern here. There is like one a year, and it's generally a day off from it all. I would live in Kirkland, Bellevue or Eastlake area of seattle if I were you. Again, if you're older and loaded though, that is not the best option and Mercer Island would be perfrect. A nice waterfront home out there goes for about $15-40 million.

Im 34, and not loaded. There are old houses in Mercer with a good chunk of land that are selling at my price range, and with time and some money, I can renovate a house or build it up to what i want it to be. I live in a townhouse next to a semi busy road, so i have no land and i have neighbors everywhere.
So im looking forward moving to a quiet and boring area, mostly quiet with some privacy.

I'll take a look at the other two locations you have suggested.

Thanks.

You will get more for your money on the east side (but the island property you're describing sounds like a good investment). Look at Newcastle as well. You can take 405 south to Boeing field from there (but you'd have to come back up I-5 from the 405/5 interchange). Overall, this is a great place to live. I moved here less than 5 years ago and have had no regrets.

I should fly to Seattle in the Fall and spend a week driving around looking to different areas to get a better perspective.

Thanks again.

Found this little gem. Its been recently rebuilt from ground up, its a bit pricey for its size and there is barely any land.

But take look at the size of the garage.

I lived on the island when working downtown. Its a comical commute, 15min tops with easy public transportation options. Nothing really sucks on the island as the eastside or downtown is a trivial bridge trip. Most shopping was done in Bellevue.

The middle vein of the island has decent but older homes, the lakeside homes are for the ballerz, but the other poster is right - you can get a lot more for your money on the Eastside.

I eventually moved to Renton and got a McMansion for what I was paying on Mercer. Plus if you plan on working at the airport, Renton has the best commute options imo with easy access to Renton Mall, Southcenter Shopping Center, and backroads to the eastside (Issaquah, Bellevue).

Mercer island is a nice neighborhood, but theres nothing to do.. Youll be neighbors with bill gates, Pete Nordstrom, etc. why not look at west seattle, renton or bellevue area?

I didn't want to be the one to say it.

OP That place you found up in Ballard is fine and it's in an up and coming neighborhood being filled by 30 somethings. Great bars, parks etc but you will hate the commute. There are 3 distinct traffic zones between Ballard and Boeing field. If you want to be close to Seattle and work look at Beacon hill which looks down on both. However, what you are going to get on this side of the water is going to be much less than what you could potentially get on the eastside.

I've lived here for more than 30 years and I can tell you with all certainty that it's not the mild weather that you have to be wary of.. it's the TERRIBLE drivers.
