Hello All,

I am trying to find a car for my father that will be a pure toy car. Must be sporty, no need for 4 seats, probably 2 door. Can be classic. We were going to go out and get the new 911, but I suggested that we save some cash and get nearly the same enjoyment out of something more rare. Enjoyment not being canyon carving, etc but more joy riding into town.

I was thinking Porsche 356, 993 C4S, etc. My father really would like an old porsche as we've had several. But, we are open to other makes. I wanted it to be historically significant. It will be a garage queen, and sunday driver. It does not have to be super reliable and we are OK with putting reasonable amounts of money into it.

Budget is around $50k, but we are obviously flexible if we see something we really like.

Need some suggestions. TIA!

Nice I was going to say that, a 67 Mustang fastback or a 69 Camaro Z28. When muscle cars like these are done right they have a very unique presence and feel to them. I'm actually negotiating with someone right now for his 67 fastback body that I'll restore.

An Atom would definitely not be ideal for cruising around town...

A classic muscle car could definitely fit the bill of being rare, drawing the looks, and totally suited for cruising around. Perhaps a kit Cobra? Nicely done ones pop up for sale on Ebay often enough, or you could build one / have one built exactly how you want it. For a pure driver/enjoyment car it might suit the bill nicely. And you won't have to worry about babying it or putting it in harms way were it an original.

Rare (only a couple thousand M Coupes built, fewer than 700 with the S54), distinctive looks, solid performance with an established upgrade path and holding their value quite well after 10 years. A modern car with a vintage feel, and you'll rarely pass another on the road. Also pretty practical for a 2-seater, thanks to the hatch

My vote goes to the "The Widowmaker". The Porsche 930 Turbo is definitely one of my all time favorites.

I just have something for the Rauh Welt Wide-body kits for the 930 and 993.

Historically significant, fun cruising around town, budget of 50k..your best bet is the older Porsches for sure. A 993 turbo cannot be had with that budget, so your C4S choice was a good one. I've recently helped my friend restored a Dino and came across many other Dino projects, those are awesome..but extremely expensive to restore. Those '69-'70 Mustangs are an awesome too, but I've yet to see a good condition car fall under 60k(yes I've been looking in the US market). If you're willing to spend time in restoring, this should be a real fun thing. If not, I hope your budget is a bit more flexible.

I like the suggestion of the old Ferrari, but I think the annual tab would be jaw-dropping. I love the 930, but not sure it has the "IT" factor. It does to me, but only because I know why it is significant.

Ariel atom may be too extreme. I like classic American muscle, but it may not have the sex appeal.

It is unlikely that we will turn our own wrench on the car, so kits would be tough. I love the idea of the cobra kit! I will def suggest that. Its a sunny day car, so no top is not a problem.

993 turbo is out of budget, and 996 turbo is currently like e46-moddified boy racer car to me. NO offense, great cars for sure. But, they're all beat on by now.

Can someone tell me what the most well built Cobra Kit car mfr is? I'd like to look into those. Factory 5 seems good. I wonder if they will build it for us.

Not interested in asian mfr's.

That's pricey for a 328GTS, if it were a GTB, that might be a little more fair. A friend had a 328GTS for a few years, it was fun, sounded and smelled great and wasn't too terribly bad on maintenance, for a Fezza. However an oil change required the motor coming out, and a simple stuck valve in the a/c system was a $2k quote from the dealer to fix.

As for the Z3 M Coupe, I have an S52 car, and many parts are already annoyingly hard/impossible to find, including any thing climate control related and nearly all things that make the coupe different from the roadster. Plus, I'd much prefer a convertible for a weekend/non-track car.
