Is there any point getting a warranty?
Hi Guys,
I'm looking to purchase a 335i which im going to mod both internally and externally. I just wanted peoples opinions on whether its worth getting a warranty (BMW or 3rd Party) if i am going to do mods to the engine which will most probably invalidate any warranty i buy? Your thoughts would be appreciated. |

I've got a stock 335d, and after 7 grands worth of warranty items, I'm gonna say, get a warranty, and don't mod it unless you get deep pockets.
I have been unlucky though, no one else seems to have had that many issues with a 35. |

Good question. I guess if the mods invalidate the warranty then no, no point having one! Ask before you get the warranty. I asked (my car has a few mods) and they basically said no, you're not covered. That was the Quentin Willson one. I might get flamed for this, but here's my take. The 335i is cheap to buy (used) but expensive to fix. If you can't afford to pay, don't play. Me? I can (afford it if it goes pear shaped) so I do play. The way I see it is a modded£17k (say) 335i with a reserve fund is a hell of a lot better fun than (say) a new-ish Mondeo for £20k. So I don't have a warranty, which when you're my age is as close as it gets to being a rebel! Mike. |

Drive one and see if you really think it's slow enough to need modding, then make your decision. For some fast is never fast enough, but if it is acceptably quick and you are happy with it who cares?
As Mike says, if you're going to mod it then you need to consider that effectively you are making yourself the warranty underwriter.

Thanks for your comments guys.
I think What I may do is get a warranty for the first year and in the first year just do asthetic mods so that hopefully anything mechanical is still valid under warranty and then in year 2 forget the warranty and do mechanical mods. All I have to do now is find a 335i with the spec I want and the right price. Theres not many Auto M Sports, Black, with Black leather and prof sat nav on the market at the mo. Looking for one with max 40ishk on the clock, 07-08 plate. There was a good one with BMW doncaster I missed out on and now theres only 1 on auto trader but its been for sale for a while and i'm wondering why its not sold yet? |

Jb4 is a good mod and is next to invisible, remove for warranty.
As my car is over 60k, warranty becomes prohibitively expensive £1k per year. As such I won't bother. I'll use indies and recon or upgraded parts where necessary. Mine has dp's and fmic now though, which aren't easily removed...

you can always remap and just have remap removed if it needs warranty work
warranty on 335i is a must imo your only issue is if it breaks down completely you can't use BMW assist you will need to get it towed at your expensive, get the map removed before taking it into bmw. However, i can't think of anyone who has suffered this failure, normally it is limp mode. |
