G-G-G-G-Gimme a Garmin

OK, so I'm used to using my Garmin Nav, and it is very useful and generally accurate.

I had to use my Pro Nav yesterday as the Garmin was in the other car. It is shi. sorry, not very good. The twirling knob will take some getting used to when dialling in an address, but the 4 character post code search is worse than useless. I was darting around Stoke, looking for a particular item, so was being sent from one supplier to another. I got a postcode of one place, and put it into the Nav, but as I didn't have a street name, it just took me (back) to the centre of Stoke, rather than where I wanted to be. I had to use the Info Plus, where Stacey from BMW found a road name and sent it to my Nav so I could get to my destination.

So, not only do you need a postcode, you need a street name too. I'll try and remember that!

Mike

FWIW I have been tempted to throw a Garmin out the window many times.

Again, Advantage Garmin. You can't do that with Pro Nav (and I wanted to yesterday!)

If you twiddled your knob more often it wouldn't take as long to get to your destination.

This is the reason why I didnt order it on my car. Rather use a Tomtom or the Bmw/Garmin thing they installed for free when I picked it up.
For some reason everyone still wants Nav/idrive though.

Depends where you live. If in Texas I could blow it away with my 9mm.

idrive is far more use than the Nav.

i really like idrive.

iDrive = better telephone system, better sound system better controls, DVD player, and much more.

2012 model cars Nav will be better though not much use for older cars which sucks.
The phone system is better but the sound system is identical (the sound is identical, the menu system is different). And what do you use a DVD for in a car, except the Nav map?

Because its not just a Sat-Nav, its a multi function tool and I wouldn't buy a BMW without it. It looks great too.

True, but its a lot of money just for a "multi function tool".

But on the other hand............. you probably get perfectly good lights as standard - but I paid extra for xenons and you get perfectly good seats but I paid extra for leather etc...etc... ........... so its each one to their own really...

There is certainly a better quality of sound coming out and no distortion right up to the max volume off an MP3.

Its still no aftermarket system but its make me think twice about Alpine.
That may be true for your particular car, but that is unrelated to iDrive. You can spec a Professional Nav BMW which still has a crap, underpowered base level sound system.

In the grand scheme of things it's really not. Also it can help with Re-sale/part-ex etc.

I guess that in the next few months and running up to when the F30 comes out the deals should get even better and better while they are trying to shift E9x's. Me, I couldnt wait that long and got mine now (before the missus went off the idea of a new one )

Yes you are right. idrive/nav is more desirable on the used market and it is kind-of expected these days on the likes of a BM. For me, I'd spent enough on other options when I ordered mine so it went to the bottom of the list as I'm not too fussed!
I think I was probably put off it when I looked at a 57 reg 335d in June and it had nav. TBH I thought it was crap. The salesman tried to put my address in and it didnt find it that easily at all - not compared to a normal sat nav. I couldnt see what the fuss was about. The idrive stuff is a nice-to-have. But I bought the car to drive - not to play with the knobs.
But thats just me. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever - if you like it.

Yeah I agree mate, it's a great drivers car which I found enhanced by being fully loaded.

Yeah the sat-nav is not brilliant. I actually hardly used it. Least you saved some hard-earned which could go towards a holiday!

So Standard vs standard without the upgrades id say there is a clear difference but not anywhere near as big as say loud speak system upgrade.

its more clarity and distortion free for its power with idrive.

as i played the same music from the iphone in both cars i can tell there is a difference. some may not.... but its there.

i just need to replenish my funds and get alpine upgrade
Dunno, they probably get the speakers out of a spare parts bin on the base stereo so it may just be the speakers are from a different supplier.

What I can say is my car does not have iDrive. It does not have the crap base stereo either.

I did get a loaner car with iDrive and the base stereo and the sound was junk. I only got the HiFi level stereo (and I now regret not just getting Logic 7) but even that with no iDrive is much, much better than a base stereo with iDrive.

I suppose the newer LCI sat nav is probably better than the one I'd seen the 57 plate 335d, but after 4 grand of extra's I'd thought I'd better stop there.
And you really need the pro nav although nice kit seems a big rip off price wise when new.

As a side note (as I know you like the 335d) I probably would have bought the 335d back in June but .... the robbing stealer (BMW dealer at Southampton area) wanted my old 56 plate 330d plus ten grand . He could fook right off. Was a really nice car and had Michelins so the ride was much better than the old 330d but I couldnt justifiy £10K for a 335d one year newer than mine.

Yeah mine was the pro-Nav. Still not all that though. The Business one must be junk

335d is a cracking car but I can understand why you didn't buy that one with that deal. Main thing is that you got a better deal and a brand spanker!
