Super Unleaded - 335i

Whats people's experience of using super unleaded in their 335i's?

Do you notice any difference in performance or MPG's?

Thanks

You do feel a difference.

Tesco Momentum and Shell V-Power is my choice.

It does not feel as good with BP Ultimate though. I've noticed it each time I've used BP.

There are a couple of Shell garages near me that are good with their prices too so might try the V-Power and see what its like.

Whats its a litre up in Aberdeen?

I think it's £1.40 per litre. £80 it cost me to fill on Friday.

Sadly we don't get petrol any cheaper in Aberdeen.

Tesco momentum 99 was judged the best by Thorley motorsport testing. Personally I couldn't tell any difference between Normal and premium, although I do treat it to the tesco 99 if I'm not going on any long motorway journeys.

Which Car did a review on high octane fuels some time back and judged Tescos to be the best value for money

Maybe, but not if it knackers your HPFP. I only use V power, it has zero ethanol in it........but I accept I may be a victim of marketing hype.

Interesting to hear that V-Power has zero ethanol in it.......that has almost the decision.

I didnt know anything about it till this afternoon, but dont want to use fuel that could cause problems

Ethanol is added to most petrol now as it attracts a tax incentive for being produced from sustainable sources, i.e. it is a bio fuel!

I think Tesco 99 has more ethanol than most, my old M5 hated the stuff, ran superbly on V-Power though.

Noticed that in my old V6 petrol too, there was no power difference between Tesco 99 and VPower, but the car was noticeably smooother and quieter on the Shell stuff.

Agreed on the points above. V-Power is the best so far. I have read extensively on the US side of the forum about ethanol gas, and in North America, BMW only recommends a "Top Tier Detergent Gasoline" which is essentially V-Power (no ethanol added). Some gasoline has up to 15% added. Not good for the HPFP.

As I am taking my 335 back to North America, I had to read into this. The petrol is better on this side of the pond, and Tesco 99 is good, but as often as I can, I use V-Power.

I found V-Power gave me some good gains at Santa Pod this year, shaved 0.2 seconds from the standard 335i 1/4 mile times.

A lot of people can feel a difference which makes these comments from the E92 335i Drivetrain project manager a bit confusing.

"if you run the car on 100 octane you won't see more than 300hp. We have 100 in Germany and there are no gains in either power or economy because the electronics are optimized."

An interesting article, and a must read for all 335i owners can be read on the Eurotuner website:

V-Power has ethanol in it, as required by a legal mandate to blend biorenewables into fuels (and has done for about 2 years now). This is so that Shell can comply and meet the targets outlined by Governments initiative, to decrease CO2 output, the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

I believe your right, It was in the past that V-Power was advertised as a pure super fuel without Octane Boosting ethanol mixed in but after 30 mins of research on the net all the evidence is there in writing that there is a Mandate in place and V-Power is a major chunk of shells consumer sales therefore they have blended in up to a 'Maximum' of 5% so they say to meet their obligations under this legislation.

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know anything about the Mandate or the fact that shell has started adding ethanol until you mentioned it and decided to do a little research.

So there isn't any decent fuel on the market anymore? I have only been running shell v power... might as well go back to premium!

Apparently so...... I will still be using V-Power though as it is the Cleanest fuel and by the looks of things has the lowest percentage of ethanol. Even boggo standard fuel seems to have ethanol in it now to keep in line with this ridiculous Mandate.

Ah, I stand corrected. Looks like they were forced into this fairly recently.
I suppose if Shell has to put some ethanol in, but to a maximum of 5% they could just put an eensy weensy 0.000001% in? Or is it not that simple?

And yes, I agree with Diseasel that using valuable land and water to grow biofuel to make perfectly decent petrol worse for engines.......is bonkers.
