How about a low mileage Skoda Octavia VRs?
I tried a petrol one and was most impressed at the build quality and performance, and they look good value to me.
Not the most desirable "brand image" but who cares when the car is good enough?

Mike.

I bought a low mileage P38 as a runabout and have ended up keeping it. Great for the winter and lovely wafty car. Nice ones with low mileage in good conditon hold their money at this sort of price.

Different league but, how about a Golf GTI until you get things sorted and can afford something else?

Always had lots of fun when I drove my mates'!

I prefer to use my own research/experience than believe everything that Mr Clarkson says ;-)

The later ones are the best. Mine is a 2001 and has been absolutely fine.

I would consider a Civic 2.2 diesel. EX spec if you can find one.

Drive them both and you'll find the 1 series will knock spots off the A3 as a driver's car.

If you prefer the A3 there's no way you're a car enthusiast.

I know you wanted smaller but I usually find these are cheaper than the Focus or Astra's...
