I hate the car buying experience.

Quick question. Has anyone had someone negotiate the deal on a new vehicle for them?

I dread the experience as I always walk away after the deal closes wondering how I got screwed. I expect them to make a profit, no problem there, I just don't want to look back and see they have broken out party hats, noise makers, a barrel of beer, and everyone is "high fiving" the salesman.

Any thought?

Is that $500-$1000 BELOW invoice price?

My salesman is talking Invoice + 500.

For a 2012 E90-E93 models, below invoice is now pretty common.

Bellow. Paying above invoice for an outgoing model is silly.

When I bought the BMW, I used Costco and these people http://www.checkbook.org/auto/carbarg.cfm. My local BMW dealer came close to but did not do better than the best regional bid. Which is what I wanted -- I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting completely screwed. I ended up buying the floormats and the tsotchkes from the dealer were minimal so I think I got a decent deal.

I just use Costco on big volume sellers like the Hondas. I don't have the time to screw around for hours to save $100 or $200.

Since I'm a car nut, I'm a lousy negotiator when it comes to buying cars. When I see one I really want I start to drool which is a tip off to the salesman.

This deal would be for a 2012 X3 for my wife. There is a 2011 floor model that is being offered at invoice + 500, but it doesn't have some features that I want her to have.

I'm with USAA and haven't used their car buying service, but one of my coworkers who is also a USAA member did and was pleased with it. He feels like he got a good price and it saved him a ton of time. He just showed up, picked up the car, paid, and left.

Use a site like Edmunds.com to build a car with the options you want. It will give you the MRSP, Invoice and approximate price buyer's are paying in your area for that particular vehicle.
You can also use several sites like NADA,KBB and Edmounds to get the approximate value of your trade-in.
Then put out as many Internet price requests depending on how far you want to drive to buy the new vehicle.
Once you get a quote ask them to give the actual out the door price with all the extra costs listed. This will include sales tax, license, title fees and most times additional dealers profit fees that you have to watch out for. They try to make them sound like normal transaction fees such as dealer's fees, advertising fees, etc. This is pure BS so you should able to negotiate those fees also.
Then when you go to the dealer's finance office, they will do their best to sell you add on packages of warranties, paint protection, rust protection, etc.
I never buy any of the extra crap.

do research before going in. Tell them what you want to pay. If they say no, walk away. When I was buying mine. They came off 2100 off the back. I offered them 2000 less than that. They told me we can't do that. I said sorry we couldn't do business. I got up walked out and by the time I got to my car, they already asked me to come back in to talk again. They then took off 1000 more and I said I already told you my offer. I stood up and walked again. Before I got to the door they said they will take the deal. Mine was a used car so it's probably different than buying a new

Make an offer. If they can do it they will, if not they won't. Everyone has to make money. Buy one now. They are offering up to $9000 off right now. They do this every year at this time.

I have the Edmunds info on MSRP and Invoice in my area. Unfortunately there would be a trade-in (non BMW), but as I understand it, the trade-in should be negotiated BEFORE the new vehicle talks.

No. Do not mention your trade-in at all. After you get a final price ask them to appraise your vehicle as if they were to take it as a trade-in. Act surprised about your vehicles worth. Tell them you have to reconsider trading in your vehicle because you were planning on keeping it as a DD or some BS. Go home, return the next day. Get car.

as others have said, ask for invoice. if you can get it around that.

most dealers like to ask what monthly you feel like paying and then work with finanace to get you that. it's funny the games they play.

Too bad you don't live near me. I would totally hook you up! On a 2011 E90 the lowest they let me right now ... I probably shouldn't say in public, BUT, a bit below factory invoice is about as good as it gets on that car.

Also, no salesman is having a party for selling a new car around invoice. Trust me.

what does pretending to trade your car in have anything to do with this?

Not sure about you, but my bank (USAA) negotiates the lowest price avaiable. If there is an agreement, the car manufacture must uphold the price. Now that being said, it's still probably not the best deal possible, but if you want to nickle and dime down more, it's a good start.

Yeah, you can go on the usaa website and log in and then under products and services select car buying service. Then you can pick the car you're looking for, the trim level, options, etc., and the site will show you the negotiated prices. You might be able to do better negotiating on your own, but from what I saw, the negotiated prices looked pretty good.
