3rd gear vibration
Soooo.... My shifter in third gear vibrates excessively, especially under acceleration. Does that mean the syncros are gone? Should I be worried?
I don\'t get this feeling in any other gear. |

Does it vibrate mainly in a front-back motion? Are you able to shift into third without crashing the gears or feeling any untoward crunching? If shifts are smooth, your synchros are probably okay. Front-back play in the shifter may mean that the shift forks are worn or the baulk ring that pushes the synchro into position has an excessively worn groove (the fork essentially rides in a groove in the baulk ring, which is spinning all the time). Are you in the habit of resting your hand on the shifter when driving? That can cause the kind of wear I am describing but that would take a fair number of miles, perhaps 80k of sustained "shifter-riding". Regards. |
