BMW - 0 Pothole - 2
Made me cringe It will be almost as bad tomorrow when I get the tyres replaced (4 non-RFT's) and see if the car is still straight. It was a big pothole Mike |

That's a sore one.
I honestly can't see the wheels lasting that one. Very surprised not too see flat spots on the rim from that view. I'd certainly be submitting a claim to who is responsible for the road as that should never happen. |

I haven't had it on the jack yet, but the rim doesn't look bent.
It certainly went with a bang! Both tyres maintained air pressure. TBH if someone else drove the car they probably wouldn't notice anything strange. There's no vibration or pulling to one side, the only difference is that it is slightly noisier, which reduces on a right hand bend (obviously as the load is off the tyres). I was in a quandary whether to put 2 new RFT's on the one side - and then have odd tyres - the front I suspect is the original at 15000 miles (5mm tread left) with the rears probably having been replaced (4mm tread left). But as I'm no great fan of RFT's I am going to get 4 proper tyres on it (I've already got a spare and compressor/sludge). These staggered set-ups are a pain when this happens! There are those that will say that non-RFT's would have stranded me (at 23:30hrs, on a wet road in the middle of nowhere), but I'm not so sure. I tend to think that the sidewalls are that strong, they have ripped themselves off the bead. Probably proper tyres woudl have bent the rim though. Oddly, a new rim is probably a similar price to a new tyre!!! So, it's 4 P-Zero Rosso's going on, with the wallet £600-odd lighter at least The other question is why didn't I take out the £350 tyre insurance when I bought the car a couple of months ago. Bugger! I buckled a wheel 2years ago, only felt vibration over 85mph.
Needed replacing.

I believe 4" is the depth that matters in these things - may be wrong though. However, in your favour is the fact the Council is clearly aware of it and once aware of it have a duty of care to fix it and take reasonable efforts to warn drivers in the meantime. Are there any signs in the area such as 'temporary road surface' or 'ramp' as that is the 'trick' they play to absolve themselves of responsibility. If not, certainly worth a claim. You need to ascertain if the road in question is the responsibility of the Highways Authority or local Council.
I suspect a google search will help you draft a letter that ticks all the right boxes claim wise. |

Local council, even though it is a Trunk Road. As you say, it looks as if they've had a go at it a couple of times. Unsuccessfully! |

The council will argue that it's marked, albeit from a previous repair by the looks of it. Apparently if it's marked they don't have to pay compensation.
