Microsoft Patents ‘Avoid Ghetto’ Feature For GPS Devices

http://seattle.cbslocal.com/2012/01/...r-gps-devices/

Quote:
Microsoft has been granted a patent for its “avoid ghetto” feature for GPS devices.

A GPS device is used to find shortcuts and avoid traffic, but Microsoft’s patent states that a route can be plotted for pedestrians to avoid an “unsafe neighborhood or being in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures.”
I wonder what criteria they use to determine if it is a place you want to avoid, you can not assume all people want to void certain areas. I wonder if they do some sort of user profile first and make suggestion on areas to stay out of. There are place in the deep south that non-rednecks should avoid as well. Just ask the Topgear guys, they almost got shot.

BTW, this feature seems like of racist.

The GPS likely uses crime data to avoid volatile neighborhoods. Not sure how it would classify in such a way as to be racist. I trust questionable black people WAY more than I do questionable white people anyway so it wouldn't work like that.

yeah I went to college in Philly in the 80's and it was a few good areas surround by bad, so you had no choice. However, when I lived in San Jose CA it would have been nice to avoid East Palo Alto, with all the drugs wars going on there in the early 90's

It uses crime data. If a neighborhood full of white people is rated as a high crime area, then it will avoid in the same manner as if the neighborhood was predominately black.

I wouldn't call that racist if it uses crime data from all communities. "Ghetto" is a science/anthropology term that has meaning.

Awesome feature btw

What if you want to go the ghetto? Is there an "avoid safe roads" option like the avoid toll roads option in some Garmin units?

Since you are in Florida, you could visit the pork and beans area of Miami. They are always on the first 48.

Been there done that... great show by the way.

Common sense rules apply in every bad neighborhood. If you are not looking for trouble; rarely will it find you.

Following common sense is key;

1. Don't bring attention to yourself.
2. Don't look sketchy or look like you're up to no good.
3. Do not flaunt wealth (driving an M3 through the hood in this case is a bad idea).
4. Don't associate with anyone that appears sketchy or looks like a drug dealer.
5. Act calm, cool and collected.
6. Don't purposely go to crime infested areas if you don't need to. Most of the time these areas / locations are obvious. (areas on the outskirts of downtowns, run down downtown areas and the like.)

I don't know why in about 90% of situations anyone would bother you if you follow those rules... Gangbangs, muggings and drivebys aren't exactly a daily occurrence. I've driven through some pretty rough areas at night in Miami and Orlando and was never bothered. Not that I recommend either but it's not difficult to figure out in any city; where these areas might be.

So if you're driving across the country, does it route you completely around Ohio and Michigan?

I tell you I usually have no problems at night, since most criminals are not watching you at night since they really can not tell who you are. My experience is been board day light, I have been in a few shady areas during the day and got some serious bad looks, and been followed once. Once in Philly I was stopped at a Light and watch two guys steal wheels and tires off a park car while everyone watched. Another time was driving through Brooklyn on the express way and car broke down in front of me and they were just able to get the car off the road on to a shoulder. Came back past the car a few hours later it is was partially stripped. I guess they did not get the tow truck there in time.

Awesome. Back when the GTR first came out, I got to take one to Jacksonville for some work. On the way back it routed me through the ghetto. Thanks bro.
