Ignition Coil Issue???
I just got an email from my dealer about the ignition coils on my E90 325i. Thought I should share the info.
> Morristown BMW is committed to delivering the ultimate in product > and service satisfaction to you, our customer. We became aware > of a potential problem that could affect the Ignition Coils in your > vehicle. We invite you to stop in at Morristown BMW at your > earliest convenience, in order to inspect the coils in your vehicle. To > make this process as convenient as possible, there is no > appointment necessary. We just ask for your patience for > approximately 30 or 35 minutes, while we inspect and/or replace > the effected components. Hopefully all of your dealers are doing something about this. From the limited knowledge I have about how cars run, this could have the potential to be something big. |

Funny you should mention ignition coils - my wife's X3 was in the shop for winter tires and they did replace the ignition coils on her car. assumed it was something that the new e90s do not have to worry about.
Do you know if there is a cut off - that is a date after which new cars no longer have this issue. BTW for the X3 the dealer told me that it was a recall but not a critical one, i.e. the work gets done when cars are brought in for regular servicing. And I thought that the 2002 Audi spark plug coil thing was behind me.... |

Funny thing indeed... I had a problem on my 2003 325xi a year or 2 ago. One of the coils stopped working causing the engine to "drop a cylinder", engine light comes on, and I take it directly to the dealer that morning. They replaced the broken coil as well as all of the other ones. It was a problem with that particular batch/brand they knew about at the time.
My question is why would the problem still be happening. You would think after the first set of problems they would have switched suppliers..

I got the same email from Morristown BMW. The only problem is that I didn't buy my E90 from them. I was never in contact with their service department before.

I just took my car in yesterday for software iDrive updates and the SA and I went through everything... my dealership is the best (well they sell ferraris and maseratis and etc.) so they don't BS and give 5 star service..... anyway he did not mention any recall except for the software. I was looking at the screen with him and I did not see anything either. My car was built first week of August. Maybe it is spam if some people are getting it that have no reason to get it ! Best of luck

I talked to the dealer and it seems they don't know how to send emails.
They sent that email to all their customers instead of the people who were affected. There is an issue with the ignition coils on the 02-04 3 Series and not the E90s. Sorry for the false alarm. |

The email came from director of service. If it was from the sales dept. it probably would gone straight into the junkmail box. I figured the service ppl would have a clue. I figured wrong. Well, now I know. |

Needless to say I made Audi pay for it all in the end, but the point is that this shouldn't happen. What annoyed me most was that Audi knew of the problem but didn't contact me to give me the option of having it fixed, instead they waited for my car to break down in the middle of nowhere  After this incident, my A4 has never been the same. The engine is missing something, and guzzles juice. I have to say that the post made my heart sink to think that my E90 could have a similar problem, glad to hear that it was an email gaffe and not a real problem!

Agreed - not only did I have that issue on my Audi as well - luckily I caught it (Forum postings) before it became a problem and requested that the coils be checked) BUT my wife's X3 just had its coils replaced this week in a recall !!! So yes, I was very relieved myself. However, I am astounded at how Bosch (for whom I have the greatest respect) continues to get away with shoddy qulity control issues. And if the coils actually come from one of the multitude of mom-and-pop suppliers loitering around Bavaria and Baden-Wurtemberg, then shame on Audi/BMW/Mercedes for not cracking down. On an unrelated note, a few years ago Bosh admitted that the turbos on the diesels were crap and needed to be replaced. This affected countless models from all of the above-named manufacturers. Amazing that this can still happen. Frustrating. |
