open intake?

So I thought i posted this but now do not see it so will quickly post again and excuse if my other one shows up.

I have the AFE and it is an "open" design where by closing the hood it seals the airbox but with the hood open well it is oepn

My piece of rubber stripping that went along the top of the airbox and created the seal with the hood ripped and was gone for several weeks. I got the new part today and put it on and I definetly noticed a difference. And I am wondering if it is feasible that air was escaping since it was not sealed?

Also wondering on a dyno-they open the hood and essentially the airbox is wide open. Would this not decrease the amount of air getting sucked into the actual intake tubing since any air being sucked in good more effectively escape through the wide open top?

I am wondering if that lowered my dyno results? Any thoughts

no, if anything, when the hood is up, it's sucking more air

That's why I think that dyno comparisons with these intakes are questionable since the intake is sucking in so much air from the fans with the hood open.

If that air filter were your head, would you be able to breathe more easily with the hood closed or the hood open?

My opinion : this sucks ! cuz the fresh air from outside could not 100% reach the filter when the hood is closed during driving. the filter just sucks the heat coming from the engine bay . that shield would only keep the heat away coming from the sides , but not the heat coming from the top .
So what did u think why bmw designed the platic airtunnel which is connected with the oem airbox ? the sound would be great , but don't expect any horse power gain .

The idea of the rubber creating a seal is not to trap in air or anything like that, it is to protect it from heatsoak. If it was just open it would be sucking in all hot air. Yes, when the hood is open it is able to suck more air in.

Ya you obviously no nothing about how an intake works or the AFE is designed. The heat shields is a complete box minus the top-it surrounds the sides and bottom with heat resistant material-then it has the stock intake tube from the front grille bringing in the fresh air, just like it brought in to the closed bmw OEM part which was complete plastic and tiny-which offered no heat protection and low flow.

As soon as the hood is closed the intake turns into a closed system-no air from the engine bay can get in as the heat shields sides are high enough that when the hood closes,it seals on top of the shield-so it is the same as any other closed design (ie gruppe m or whatever) when the hood is closed.

And all you have to do is open the hood and feel the filter and shield compared to the engine and it is wayyy cooler even after hard driving.

Yes my original question was dumb-makes sense now. However I realized the rubber seal gave me a bit more power because like someone mentioned it completed the seal and thus kept the hot engine air from coming in like it is supposed to. Without that seal some hot engine air could come in and that is what accounted for the difference.

And actually afe gives you a solid 5-7hp depending on what else you have going. With the EVO software alone and that intake 20whp is what I got and evo is supposed to be good for 15hp. Also afe dyno sheets have proven 5-7 hp gain on these cars.
