Exhuast cleanliness

So we all see that black build up on our tail pipes, but we can clean that......well about deep down inside, doesnt that stuff build up over time in our exhuast system and especially in our cats?! This doesnt cause problems?

I think the bmw air filter does the job...why don't you do some little research it would help you somehow.

what the hell are you talking about?

carbon/soot is a by-product of the combustion process.
unless you plan on converting to hydrogen power, it's something you'll have to get over.
like dirt on tires. yes, it can be cleaned off the sidewalls, but what about deep inside the treads...where you can't get your q-tips to fit?

the tips i mean, its hard to get them shiny. the black stains are hard to get off

turbo's run rich... black crap on exhaust and sometimes on rear of car.

the Direct Injection does help to reduce the rich mixture... but it can only do so much.

It's normal and should be burned inside the cats.

i would say wash it with regualar soap and water, and if it doesnt come as clean as you want, try some VIM, it should take off all the staining, then clean them up with some wheel polish, to get them all shiny, and you'll be good to go

my bad.

i think you just have to keep vigilant. something about the carbon causes it to etch against metal, so you can't allow it to remain for too long.
also helps to keep the tips polished.

Good answer. If you clean it once a week you can just wipe it right off most of the time with a cotton towel.
